Here are graphs of wheel torque versus speed using data posted on Temple of VTEC. Remember GIGO.

Notes: The calculated speed in gear for 2.0 is right on what has been published by mag road tests. For 2.2 it is slightly lower than posted here. 55.2 at 8000 in 2nd versus 57 posted. If the engine will really go to 8200, then I also calculate 57. Otherwise it may be speedometer error, or tire diameter.

I used the same rolling radius for both cars. This makes sense since the Hoosier 245/45/16 and the 245/40/17 have the same diameter. Neither the Bridgestone nor tirerack web sites list the diameter for the potenza 050 245/40/17 yet.

data from tov. rev and torque read, power calc

wheel torque vs. speed to 90 mph

As requested, added since the original post, here is the 90 mph graph with larger diameter 275/40/17 tires on the 2.2. The curve moves right due to higher gearing, and down, since the larger tire is like a gear ratio reduction. (The torque at the axle is of course the same, but it applies less force to the circumference of the tire, since the radius is larger.

Wow, the new one drops out of Vtec on every shift. Thats Gotta really be ungratifying to drive. Every time I've shifted at 8000 instead of 9 on semi hard acceleration it's always met a frown to not find vtec on the shift. BOOO. Silly mistake by honda in my mind.

Do the graph again with the Hoosier 275/40 17. I can't imagine anyone running the 245. the 275 is .8 taller. it might make 60 in 2nd with that tire. Not to mention the tire is a full inch wider. Thats NICE!

thanks to the graphs.

6 of one, 1/2 dozen the other if you ask me. the 04 does seem to have more area, particularly in the upper gears, but its not very drastic.

IMO of course

To put a rider on that -- would it be possible for you to graph predicted acceleration and distance covered based on the data you have now? That would answer the question that's really on people's lips -- "Which car is quicker in <arbitrary speed comparison>?"

Thanks,
Steve

30-70 through the gears, the 04 is quicker by a noticeable and repeatable margin. Not only did my simulator predict that (based on the torque curves), but we did some real world accelerometer tests today to confirm it (and the results were very close to the simulator predictions). Results will be on vtec.net, but I would imagine that for auto-x, 30-70 mph probably covers most of the range of speeds seen, and if you go to lower speeds the 04 will pull there as well.

UL, I'm going to start crying soon if you don't post your analysis on vtec.net. Neither of us want that to happen...
