99 Boxster vs 04 S2000
My dad has a 99 Boxster with the 2.7 motor and tip. Having just broken in my 04 S2000 (800 miles now) I thought we should test our cars out against each other.
We did a few rolling starts and standing starts on a deserted long ass 2 lane road and I won every time. Usually got about a 1/2 car at the start and then just pulled from there. By 4th I was always far enough ahead to safely pull over into his lane ahead of him. (@ 3-4 car lengths)
Every time I would engage the clutch like normal driving to start the race and it seemed to work fine for me. Once I did try a launch, but only @ 3k. Spun the tires for a second or so and that was it. Didn't really feel too much faster to me.
Felt kind of bad beating on my car like this with only 800 miles on it, but it didn't catch fire or anything so... I never even shifted at redline. Maybe like 7700-7800 everytime.
Bottom line is I won everytime, the car performs great to me, and we both had a blast. We even raced for the time it takes for our tops to go down...Yup, I won that too! Although I will admit his looks nicer with the top down since the clamshell covers most of it, although it takes about twice as long as mine to go down.

My Mom drives a 98 boxster with the sport touring package and I also pull on her aswell, not as much as you did, but I believe this to be because the 04s are putting down substantially more power than the 00-03. Although personally I must admit that the sound of the boxster both inside and out is in another world when compared to the s2000, that sound at 4500rpm is just undescribable to me.
Ha, he'd like to think he was. He said he was using the tip and shiftin at the redline in every gear. I think he was even tucking his head down to get better aero!
(We both had tops down)
His is the smaller of the flat sixes. 2.7, and I believe now they use 2.9 in the regular boxster.

If your dad has a '99 he has a 2.5 (201 hp). The 2.7 (217 hp) was not introduced until 2000 (upgraded to 225hp with improved VarioCam in 2003). The "S" has a 3.2 rated at 250hp (258 in 2003).
The tip is just an automatic (with power a power robbing torque converter). As such the acceleration of the tip cars is slower than the 5 and 6 speed manual cars.

Tiptronic is a huge performance sapper, no matter what Porsche says. Acceleration tests show it. I once raced my friends tiptronic Carrera 4 (vs. my 6 speed Carrera 2) and I pulled on him in short order. The I-6 engines just don't have the torque down low like an american V8 that can get away with the automatics w/ very little performance decrease. Especially the old Boxster engines. The newer Boxsters, and definitely the Boxster "S" will give you a much. much better match
