Default help-brother's ford ranger 4x4 - I'm on vacation...

I am away in VT at the folks, and my brother is having trouble with his 1998 ford ranger 4x4 - I figured some of you guru arm chair mechanics may be able to help! I am always amazed by the knowledge possessed by members here...

His 4 wheel drive engagement engaged intermittently, now it doesn't at all. Once when it happened he changed the fuse, and that fixed it. The fuse is fine now. Coincidence that one time? Now he is stuck going up his driveway, and can't get it to engage in 4. (you should see this driveway!) I am going to go to a ford site and see if I can pull up a wiring schematic to see where the actuater for the transaxle is wired, and check connections. I think checking the switch might be a smart start as well... But thought some of you more mechanically inclined types (maybe as a result of owing fords?!) may have come across this, and have a couple suggestions.

No ford flaming please!

Thanks in advance.

Kent

im assuming it's one of the "shift on the fly" electronic transfer case shifters? If not i'm not sure why he can't just put it into 4wd. He can always crawl under the truck and manually put the tcase into 4wd.

Not sure on either count - push button - I'm guessing yes. I think the hubs are automatic...

How would I manually engage it?

BTW - are you missing Boulder?! And what'd you decide car wise - last I read, maybe a shelby...?!

Thanks for the responces. If I can figure out the manual method, that'd help!

not sure what transfer case it is or what is wrong with it. unfortunately that is just not enough information. This is the reason why i would never buy a car with automatic hubs or an electric transfer case shifter.

As far as my life, i miss boulder a bit, but not all that much. I'm moving to Los Angeles in August. I've been trying to juggle working full-time and school full-time which is tough sometimes but i'm having fun and had a great year on both fronts.

I just bought the Cobra Daytona last weekend. It's been raining ever since so i haven't really put it through it's paces too much yet. It made the drive from san fransisco to los angeles (400 miles) without a problem though, which is nice. I have a few track days and an autocross scheduled in the next month so i'll be able to post a good review of it after that.

Good luck with the truck. go to www.pirate4x4.com and post in the newbie forum if he still can't get it to work.

Sounds like the shift motor has gone. The next time it acts up, smack on the motor (its mounted on the rear of the transfer case), lightly, with a hammer. Then see if it works.

My 91 ranger is all manual, I once had to have my front hubs replaced. Don't know if that could be his problem. Any ford dealer will probably know the problem.

If you need to buy any new parts for the repair here is a good place...a lot cheaper than the dealers.
