Need help with metalic ringing at high RPM's!!
i believe my shifter is making a metalic ringing at high RPM's. I took it to honda for the tranny TSB's and its still there. Looks like im going to have to do it my self. Anybody have any ideas?
It's most likely the gearshift knob. Mine rings at both 4,100rpm and 8,200rpm approximately (the 8,200 is much more noticable). The way to diagnose it is to accelerate through that range, and when you hear the sound, push sideways on the gearshift knob (while still in gear). If that causes the sound to go away, it's the gearshift knob.
Other than a new shifter of different design, I know of no way to get rid of it. I suspect the natural frequency of the gearshift knob and shaft is some integer multiple/divisor of 4,100, meaning the only way to get read of it is to either change the damping on the gearshift knob, change the mass (to alter the frequency), or change the knob's material. This might be related to why later model gearshift knobs came with leather. The fact that the gearshift is attached directly to the transmission/engine is probably why we hear it when other car types do not.
What model year S2k do you have?

mine is a 00'. Its not the knob, i have tried what you are saying and the noise is still there. I am at a loss. It wasnt there for the first 5 months the it just showed up one day. I dont think it hurts the car at all its just a distraction. Im taking the car back to the dealer today and im going to have them look at it. And besides all this they broke my $1,200 Bulletproof Automotive CF Font Lip and scratched my bumper. Damn i hate the dealers. Even if i get the money for this i cant replce that lip.
oh well, guess im just gonna have to take the money and buy some goodies for my baby. to crappy dealers. Anyways i cant figure what is making this noise. I though i remembered others having this problem as well. And another reason i dont believe that its the knob its self is the fact that the knob does not rattle. I can duplicate the noice when the car is in netural (sp?) or when im driving. something is loose and it either needs to be tightened or greased. Any body got any more ideas?

I did a search, and i followed Silver Surfers techniques but the ringing is still there. I drove with just the knob on and none of the boots, just the shifter and the knob and i could clearly hear all the noises even with the top down. I kow the ringing is coming from the shifter, but i cant figure out where. Does everyones S2000 make noise when the top is up? Im not talking about the ringing but does you cabin get a little noisy when the top and the windows are up with the stero off? Anybody have anyother ideas on what could be causing the ringing?
