I was headed downtown driving at 3500 rpm 65 mph in 6 gear driving lighlty because I just washed and waxed my car. I look in my driver side mirror and notice a silver evo, so I slow down to 50 mph to see if he wants to race and then he slows way down. I maintained speed at 50 then to 55 mph and still the evo didn't want to race, he just ignored me. I continue on at 55 mph and see a white porsche carrera with xenon headlights coming up on me quick, I look over and it's my buddy Chris "mortgage broker". He rolls down his window asks where I was going, "business", so we pace eachother to about 70mph and I point forward, and we both floor it, I engaged in 3rd gear I hit 87 and go to 4th, pin out at 111 mph, and most of 5th and hit 121 mph. We hit these speeds quick. I pulled his carrera by 2-3 car lengths and I even had to go around a car in my lane, then we shut down because of traffic. I've beaten cars that were talked up to be faster than they really were, but I was pretty surprised that I beat my buddies 911. His is a 99. I've driven the 2000 Carrera with 3000 miles only, it had plenty of torque and speed, felt way faster than my s2000. Way faster, it accelerated like crazy, from a dead stop, gears 1-3, I almost hit a 100. I did beat this 99 Carrera fair and square, he couldn't believe it himself, I pulled it good.

My mods - toda header, mugen exhaust, spoon air duct / k&n, tien ra's, spoon x brace, spoon stb

from a roll my car performs way better than a dead stop, although I have no problem getting good launches, most good drivers know this about the s2000. I keep up with alot of fast cars, I'm a good driver maybe thats why I beat him, and my car runs good, I rarely beat on it only when someone wants to race, then I put the cars performance to the limit. Too bad I don't carry a video camera on my passenger seat, I've beat alot of cars in the s2000, near death experiences many times with the top down.

I might be in the minority here, but I can see a 99 996 and S2000 being about equal from speed. I have run around SIR and PIR in both the S2000 and ITR with them and don't recall them rapidly running away from either.

Is his car a tiptronic by chance?

I just looked up quarter mile times on the Carrera and they state 13.2 quarter mile and 0-60 4.6 - from a dead stop I think my car would be in trouble. My S2000, from rolls performs way different than off the line, momentum is there especially from downshifting. From 70 mph - 130 mph no higher the s2000 pulls hard for what it is. This being my daily driver I got a good feel for the car. I've gotten it up to 150 and that was pretty much the max, so I don't doubt that my buddies Carrera couldn't beat me since the Carrera tops at 175mph. I just said from the 70mph - 121mph little run we had I took him at those speeds, quickly. I wouldn't dare race a turbo though.

I agree with steve c, as I have had experience with this also. If he is tiptronic then I think it is a good race. If manual I see him slightly pulling on you. However you may be a great driver. I don't know.

His car is a manual, I know that if we kept racing until both cars topped out, he would walk me hard after 135mph - from the 70 - 121 mph little gap that we closed, I got him . . .
