Very old repost. Also a somewhat inaccurate one. What you are seeing is not an aircraft breaking the sound barrier. The F-14 is flying at a high subsonic Mach number (probably 0.9 - 0.95). The air accelerates to supersonic velocity as it passes over the front portion of the plane. The acceleration results in a pressure drop, which results in a temperature drop, which results in the cloud of condensation around the aircraft. Further back on the aircraft, the air is decelerated back to sub-sonic velocity through a weak shock, which immediately de-condenses the water vapor and makes the sharp terminating edge of the cloud. Make sense?

The short answer is that the F-14 is flying at close to the speed of sound, but is not actually "breaking the sound barrier" .

Tedow,
I love the SR-71. Sat in the cockpit of one once. Of course, it was no longer attached to the plane, which had crashed. But what a feeling. Pilots wore spacesuits, I believe. What a plane!

I'm very jealous! I've only taken pictures from the outside. I've seen several though. It's an amazing plane...you should read Skunk Works by Ben Rich. Lots of cool stories about the design, development, and operation of the plane. There's also one out there called Sled Driver, but I haven't seen/read that one yet. Oh, here's a pic I took a few years ago

Sorry to hijack your thread, gomarlins! Someone talk about the video some more...

My wife got me a copy of Sled Driver for Christmas: a limited edition published in 2003 and signed by the author, his back-seater, the first man to pilot the SR-71, and the man who set all of the speed records in an SR-71. I'm reading it just a little bit at a time. It's an incredible book; the photographs are unbelievable!

No problem. I have hijacked a thread or two in my time, plus I like the subject. Nice shot of the car and SR.
