Default First oil change... near disaster

So I take my car to the dealer for its first oil change today. I figure 3000 miles and 6 months means it is time to get it changed, ready for spring. I usually change it myself on my vehicles, but the dealer gives the first three changes free, so I took it there. 20 minutes and it's done. On the 10-mile trip home I'm thinking maybe shouldn't VTEC until I get a chance to make sure they filled it up completely, used the right filter, etc. I park it in the garage and then come back to check things out about an hour later. First thing I notice is a 6" puddle of fresh oil under the drain plug and filter area. Crap, I'm thinking they used the wrong filter and it didn't seal or something. Check the oil level it it is about 1 X low, maybe not unusual. I start the car to create some oil pressure to see if I can make it drip - and it does, directly from the oil plug. The oil plug is almost 1/2 inch out of the hole, with only a few threads holding it in! There is oil splash on the front suspension crossmember as well as the rear crossmember. They must have neglected to tighten the drain plug as it couln't have backed out that far on a 10-mile drive home. A couple of loose threads away from total oil loss and possible engine seizure....

Makes you wonder whether the 3 free oil changes is worth it....I'm glad you found their mistake before something bad happened.

Morons! They don't care. Do yourself a favor and get one of the oil drain valves and you'll have your oil changed in as much time as it takes you to drive to the dealership. I can't think of the name of it now but somebody will chime in.

sorry to hear that, but not surprised as many dealers have been guilty of that. Because of this reason (and Xviper) , I do them all myself

I am so scared of an oil change because of posts like this ! I am going to take a torque wrench to check the oil drain bolt myself when the dealer changes it and just to be safe use some high temperature tape over the bolt!!!!!!!!!!
