Default Gear heads- 4.77 final install options

So i have decided to opt for the 4.77 and have it installed locally at a shop I trust- that builds American race cars. They have a master tech/ machinist that only works on diffs.

So when talking to the guy about doing the work, he asked if there were any other things I wanted to do while we had pumpkin down... He asked me if there were any tolerances to be had in the limited slip such as adding a disk to strengthen it up or in the gears to lighten anything- not sure if he meant literally

So I need your help guys! Is there any other modifications or add ons or fix- its I should do while swapping my final gear?

Thanks in advance!

That has to be quite costly don't you think... There has to be a cost to benefit ratio too

the diff is one of the weaker points in the car. if you're running FI, changing out gears, or otherwise drive your car hard, i'd suggest getting your hands on a reinforced differential. it may save you some trouble down the road. i bought mine from rick's for $399 plus the core charge.

Does he have ALL the installation calibration specs. If not, you need to give him a copy of that part of the Helm manual. If he does this with similar specs to what's he's been used to (American diffs), you may be in for some interesting noises once he's done.

Recently, there has been a lot of debate about the "proper" backlash spec for aftermarket gears. The concensous seems to be that the 4.10s need less backlash than the 4.57s (and probably 4.77s), so the American specs might be better. Honda's OEM specs are much tighter than the average Mustang, but the recommended specs for the 4.57s seem to be pretty close to the Mustang's.

BTW, the Torsen differential is non-serviceable, and non-adjustable. The only adjustable specs are preload on the pinion and Torsen bearings, backlash between the ring and pinion, and contact pattern between the ring and pinion.

There are a LOT of numbers to do this job right. You really should have a Helm manual and all the proper instructions. Not having this is taking a bit of a gamble.
