I think I might be having a problem with the S. On Friday morning and again this morning, I open the garage door and warm the car up for about 5 minutes. Then I put the parking brake down and put the car into reverse. I begin to let the clutch out and give the car a little gas and I have heard this really loud snap/pop sound from the rear underneath of the car. I can also feel the snap/pop through the car. It is not the car stalling or stuggling for gas because it is a single loud pop/snap. Any ideas as to what it can be? I do have curb rash on the drivers rear rim which means I did clip a curb but I was doing 5 mph or less when that happened. I am thinking transmission or LSD. I am always careful never to go into reverse while moving and I have not grinded any gears so I do not know what is causing it. The car only has 5,100 miles on it. Thanks in advance.

Wet pads rust to the rotors when you apply the emergency brake. Not a problem. Mine seems to do it less now with age.

 

something in the diff area perhaps? did you check to see if you were leaking diff fluid? the diff is one of the weak points of the car. did you do any clutch drops recently or often? track it?

of course, it could have been the simple case of a beer can underneath your tire?

did you shut it off immediately? if not, what else did you hear afterward?

and i'm sure a little piece of mind knowing that if it's something serious, you're under warranty so it's all good.

Yeah, I had read about this before it ever occurred to me. The first time that it happened, I felt the resistance before the bond broke, so I knew what was going to happen... but I was still startled at how loud the "pop" was, especially in my little garage.

 

Try this experiment:
Next time you wash the car and then leave it parked for a while (like overnight) OR, if you experience similar environmental conditions that would replicate this noise the next day, leave the car in 1st gear (chock the tires if you are on an incline) and leave the handbrake OFF. You should notice the next time you move your car, that noise will be much less pronounced. This is because the rust buildup when the handbrake is off does not seize up the caliper to the rotor nearly as badly as when the brakes are clamped.
