New Gearbox and New Roof ~ Anyone else having problems ?
Hi All,
Well firstly id better say hi and appologise for my lengthy absence from the board. I used to post alot (mainly nonsense admittedly) but have just been lurking recently since work became hectic and annoying.
I havent got enough time to recount all my exploits at the mo (they include - a big tail out moment, a young lady parking her corsa *in* the side of my S at a junction, receiving a 7 day speeding ban (thanks to MT for his help and advice during that one), and other shennanigans including a hard top which wouldnt fit) but i did want to run the most recent one by you guys.
I went on a quick break to Cornwall (Polperro) last week, and long story short the car was fine as always on the M4/M5/A-road journey which took in both trafficed and open roads. I parked up at my destination, the gf and i conducted some exhaustive research on the local scrumpy, and we called it a night. Next day when driving the car suddenly i cant (absolutely cannot - as if an iron bar has been parked across the gear levers gate) get 5th gear. Finally i parked up and jostled the lever about with the car stationary, with some force i managed to engage 5th. Then it wont come out of 5th again. Finally with much rocking of the car i get the lever out of 5th. All other gears are working fine so i report the problem to Honda spend a couple of days bypassing 5th and going 4th to 6th and enjoy the sunshine.
Yesterday morning i dropped the car in to Honda Basingstoke, and had them take a look at the gearbox - and as the title of the thread suggests i also asked them to check the wear spots developing in the hood (these are appearing above the right angled roof brackets and can be seen from inside the car when the hood is up - i have checked and found a lot of threads on the US forums about exactly this issue) at the same time.
Yesterday afternoon i called to check on progress and was told "the synchromesh seems to have gone on the car, possibly as a result of a poor machining process, this has lead to excessive wear on the gearbox which is why 5th gear has probably gone". They also said they had taken pics of the roof problems and sent these to honda - result: order of new syncromesh, and new 5th gear, subsequent rebuild of gearbox, and request for new hood from Honda UK.
Today i have just received an update call, and apparently Honda dont want to rebuild the gearbox, they have decided a replacement gearbox is a better choice (which is fine by me) they have also agreed the fitment of a new hood, and have sent the parts. I asked the technician i spoke to whether either of these problems were normal occurences and he assured me they werent he thinks that "The cost of the gearbox rebuild was significantly less than a new gearbox, and yet Honda UK advised for a whole new box - they probably want to do this as this isnt a common fault and they want to strip the box down and investigate it at their leisure". Hmmmm.
Im getting the car back tonight in its current form, and then taking it back for two days next week to get all the work done. Now dont get me wrong this isnt a gripe - i cant fault the service from City Honda, as always they have been very good with the work i need doing (the only prob i have normally as in this case, is that they have a lack of courtesy cars - hence im waiting till next week to have the work done) and i cant fault Honda for agreeing the new gearbox and roof. Im just wondering - is this normal ? or have other people experienced these problems ? my car is an MY02 model bought new, Sept 02, and has had the interim 4.5K service done (at which point i specified a gearbox oil change), 9K service (another GB oil change) and 18K service done (asked for the GB oil to be checked but it didnt need doing apparently) the car currently has 25K on the clock.
Thanks all, and i hope everyone is well - ill try and check up a bit more frequently from now on (honest
).

Long time, no post, Rich
Same thing happened to my gearbox after about 12K miles and Honda replaced it without any quibble at all. It's happened to a few other people on here too - iffy synchromesh, especially in fifth, seems to be a known weakness/issue.
I didn't have any further problems with it in the 18K miles following replacement and before I p/x-ed it for the 04.

MT - cheers, glad to be back. OK its reassuring to know its not just me
then, as i say i have no gripes really, im just very glad this has happened whilst the car is still in warranty (new GB alone is quoted as

Welcome back Rich, a long post for a long absence
Glad to see it is sorted, I must say of late Honda UK seem to have improved. I think they may have a Jap there somewhere making some decisions or at least helping the decisions, these acts seem very japanese in terms of customer service and not losing face
