A request has been made for me to start this thread in conjunction with the other (4.77) gear thread.

POST ONLY IF YOU KNOW!
Post up what specs were used in your 4.57 installation and how this has worked for you since.
I'll keep this stickied for a "little while" (till people can bookmark it).

(This thread is also linked in the "Commonly Asked Questions" thread.)

According to Richmond Gears and the confirmed Backlash settings from Mr. Hesel are recomended @ .008 (thousandths). However, I had them set @ .006 (thousandths) because my mechanic said after "break-in" procedures, it should expand to .008

So far, it's pretty quiet as stock. Prrr's like a cat, no clunking noises or whinning. Nothing annoying like an excessive high rev sound. (like you need to shift), but a quiet and gentle whirlling sound. I asked him about this, and he said it's completely normal w/ this gear ratio. Well it Sounds PERFECT. It might just be my s/c'er. Since I haven't drove my car in like 3 wks. I like it!!! Works for me

Hope this helps,
Philip D.

The installation instruction can be found in the Honda S2000 service manual. The Richmond Instructions are on the Richmond Gear web site. The only thing you should pay attention to are the contact patterns (49 series gears, A in the table of illustrations) and the break-in instructions. The backlash should be set to 6 thousandths (.006) initially and it will widen to 8 thousandths within the first 200 miles as the polydyn breaks in.

All other settings should be the ones recommended by Honda.

Here's a link to the Richmond page: http://www.richmondgear.com/01instructions.html
Here is a link to a PDF version of the link above. The pictures in it are much better. http://www.richmondgear.com/ringandpinion.pdf

I just put the car back together. I had the gears checked after 800 miles to verify all bolts were torqued to spec, backlash and contact pattern were meshing correctly. The whine was bothering me, and it seems to have dissipated with the LE607. The backlash expanded to .009 after break in.

-Edited and Confirmed

Here's a quick yellow box calibration fix.
[(newRatio - stockRatio) / stockRatio] x 100 = percentError.

Ex:

newRatio = 4.57;
stockRatio = 4.10;

[(4.57 - 4.10) / 4.10] x 100 = 11.46% Error

Setting your switches to +11.46% in your yellow box would be: 0010 1110

Since the s2000 is about 1 - 2 % off to begin with. Like mine for an example mine was: -1.66 off.

11.46 -1.66 = 9.79%

Final Tuned Yellow Box Settings for 4.57 Gears @ 9.79% : 0010 0111

Other notes

- set the switches to +11.46: 0010 1110 and take a drive
- find a friend w/ a car that has cruise control or a cop
- have your friend set his cruise control at 60mph
- pull up next to him Dead Even and record your speed.

Ex:
Friend speed: 60mph
Your speed: 59mph

[(yourSpeed- friendSpeed) / friendSpeed] x 100 = percentError.

[(59mph - 60mph) / 60mph ] x 100 = -1.66667 Error

-note
If you find that your error is -neg then your going to subtract from 11.46%

If you find that your error is +pos then your going to add to 11.46%

Keep doing this until you're right on the money. Tri 75, 80, 85 mph too. The higher you go, the less error you'll get.

It started with this: http://forums.s2ki.com/forums/showthread.p...threadid=205262

I finally did it and everything went well. ( I have to thank my real good friend Alex for his help on that ! )
The most difficult part for me was to put the diff. back into place ( My real good friend was not there anymore
( This thing is heavy )
Seriously It was not that difficult to do this job ( Removing it was smooth and easy ) and adjust the new gears to obtain a perfect gear patern was a long process ( backlash set to 006 ) ( We have checked a few place around the ring gear and we have read 005 at one place ) Gear patern was set exactly at the center. ( We had to assemble and desassemble the ring and pinion 7 times to obtain this )
( BTW : This GM yellow paste works real good ! )
Talking about gears... Did you see the teeth thickness difference between the OEM one and these one ? WOW
Another thing i wasn't expect is how hard is to crush the sleeve untill there is no more play in the end of the pinion !

Driving impression : Acceleration are faster with these gears ( For some reason i was expecting more than this but from another angle i was expecting to have to shift more oftenly than this so on the overall i like it )
( Went to the v-tec zone 2 or 3 times but since i am broken em' in, i didn't pushed the car very hard. It felted like there is more power comming from the engine
I have a whinning when cruising on the highway and it completely dissapear when decelerating. It does not increase when accelerating hard. I'm planning to disconnect the driveshaft from the diff. to have a check if there is no play in the pinion end since everything took his place.
thanks

4.57 install in process right now. looks like the shim I'm going to need is thinner than the thinnest in the Honda kit.

It is possible that you will need a thinner shim ! Just be sure you have a good contact between the ring and pinion
( See the pictures on the richmond gear site )
I am so happy that Honda Canada was out of stock for those shim when i installed these gears cause i could have bought the expensive shim kit ( 350 $ cdn ) instead of pay 20$ to a machine shop to have them making me one of the good thickness.
P.S. The thinner one in the OEM service manual is : 0.1213 inch and i have one machined at 0.1030 inch.

Backlash set at .007, shim stack comes to .104 to produce a perfect pattern. This is not universal, but an excellent starting point if you're shimming the pinion for the first 4.57 build-up...

What is this shim stack you speak of?
