Default Front licenses plate & Redlight photo

LAPD has stepped up front license plate enforcement beginning June 1, 2001. The reason: 17% of those caught by their new cash cow, the red light photo cannot be id and sited because they do not properly display the front plates. According to their offical site www.lapdonline.org, they have installed cameras at these intersections since 12/1/2000:

Sherman Way and Winnetka Ave in Valley Bureau
3rd St. and Vermont Ave in Central Bureau
Imperial Hwy and Figueroa St. in South Bureau
Wilshire Blvd and Westwood Blvd in West Bureau

they added on 3/1/2001 the following locations:

Victory Blvd. and Laurel Canyon Blvd in Valley Bureau
6th St. and Alvarado St. in Central Bureau
La Brea Blvd and Rodeo Rd in South Bureau
Sepulveda Blvd and National Blvd in West Bureau

They will add another eight locations by 8/1/2001.
Location yet undisclosed.

To improve the effectiveness of these redlight photo, they are sending out special "Front plate enforcement task force" to the area where these camera are located.

Good luck everyone, and be careful out there!

I haven't really followed the developments, but in San Diego they stopped issuing photo-enforcement tickets and even refunded some peoples' money due to problems with the system. I believe there's a lawsuit in the courts protesting the invasion of privacy, private parties enforcing public laws, or some such thing. At any rate, maybe that will open the window for shutting down this "big brother" approach in other cities.

Great post RedHead. I currently have a front plate but want to remove it. I don't have my plates yet, and wasn't sure if it was smarter to wait until I did get my plates to remove the front one, or do it now. In any case, I'm heading to the dealer this weekend to ensure I can get the bumper caps to fill the holes.

Thanks again for the heads up about the intersections I will now be avoiding

A $10 fix it ticket is a lot better than a $253 ticket for running a yellow. My plate will remain in my garage. Also a fixit ticket is not a moving violation where as running a red is. Even if I got 25 tickets for no plate I still have a clean record whereas just 1 red light ticket would cost me $$$ for 4 years.

Several years ago I was stopped in Anaheim Hills for no front license plate on my 911. I showed him that it was on the floor in the back and was all beat up because it had been run over many times. I told him that my wife had knocked it off going over a curb [true - but it had happened four years earlier], that I was headed home [true], and that I had the screws at home to put it back on [true - I simply had no intention of using them]. He let me go.

Maybe under the seat is better than in the garage. And if you ran over it a few times . . . .

I used to see them all the time on Wilshire and Glendon in Westwood. Bastards!

Word of warning-. The new "red light running cameras" take a picture of both plates now as well as a close-up of the driver. One I saw in Maryland uses Digital Video. I just edited a show on them for Discovery. Just for the record. Don't run red lights. Enough dead bodies already. Big Brother is watching.

Woo hoo, for those who don't already know, they ruled that the cameras are so inaccurate that they are inadmissible in court cases. The CA Sup. court also ruled they are not unconstitutional (duh)

Don't run red lights anyways. We have too many retired S2000s and drivers.
