Default New S-02

Well guys, I just put on a brand new pair of S-02's... there seems to be one problem... the car handles kinda weird. First I thought it was all in the head but it wasn't. My car steers towards the right when I let off the gas. Then it resteers toward the left when I hit the gas. Does this make any sense to you?! Also I took a curve at 70 and it couldn't even really hold it. Usually that curve I take 70 all day long no problem. I think something is wrong with the S-02's. My tire pressure is all 36psi around. I don't know why my car steers right and left by mashing on and off the gas petal. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Alan

maybe your alignment is off? either that or they didn't balance your tires correctly. those are my guesses.

Did the tire shop balance and put the wheels on for you? When you say pair of S-02's, just two tires or four, which ones?

One of the 1st things I would do after checking tire pressure is to jack up the car/remove the lug nuts, remount the wheels ensuring a good fit on the hub, and retorque the lug nuts to factory specs in a crisscross pattern (skip every other lug nut while going in a circle). Depending on which wheel, if the wheel starts to spin while re-torqueing, have someone apply brakes or drop the car slightly so that the tire barely touch the ground, but just enough so that friction will prevent spinning.

For a more reliable tire pressure, try waiting a few hours (in the shade) until all tires have reached thermal equilibrium.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the replies guys. To answer a few questions, I only got two tires. They are for the rear. No alignment has been done, it hasn't been thrown off. Well, I think I found out whats the problem with my car. I think it is the rear S-02's I put on my car. It seems that when the guys put it on the rear right are Bridgestone's Potenza S-02 225/50/R16 92W while my left rear tires are Bridgestone's S-02's 225/50/ZR16. I need to go back to the tire place tomorrow to ask them to fix the problem.

It seems that the S-02's and Potenza S-02's are two different tires... one is a full summer tire (ZR16) while the other "isn't". That is my guess right now.... I guess I will have to see tomorrow. Thanks again for all the replies guys, anymore would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Alan

, I guess the people who sold you the tires made a mistake (hopefully this, rather than trying to dupe you).

Make sure they mount the tires on with the directional arrows pointing forward too!

holy crap! no wonder! that's a pretty bad mistake on their part. lucky for them you didn't lose control of the vehicle.

u know that for the first 500 miles the tyres are not broken in and the car doesnt handle like it should right?
anyways there are two SO2s ...one esp made for the s2k and the other is the normal one
just make sure you get the s2k one from tyre rack next time

Not true on both counts Saud.

New S02s work brilliantly right out of the box and are such a huge improvement over worn S02s it is like night and day.

There are actually 4 different types of S02, none of which are track tyres.

To wit, they are S2000 OEM S02s, Boxster OEM S02s, 911 OEM S02s and regular S02 PPs. The S02 PPs are now superseded by S03s.

Hi

Have a look under the UK forum at the technical frequently asked questions thread (stickied at the top) - there is a fairly comprehensive section on tyres which I used when the dealer fitted the Boxster SO2's to mine. It will tell you exactly what you should see on the tyre wall.

In addition there is another thread by Mikdys below which has a picture of the sidewall that you can print out and show to your dealer showing all the detail they'll need to get the right rubber.

According to Honda & Bridgstone - the correct tire pressure for SO2's is 32psi, not 36psi
