I'm thinking of getting a bike next spring so now I want to do some research on a good one? What would you guys recommend for a 1st timer's sport bike? Something that look good and have decent power. I'm thinking a used 99-00 Yamaha R6.
HaHa , these guys are trying to get you killed. There are a couple of issues with getting an R6 as a first bike. Even though it is relatively small displacement, it is still a serious race bike with race bike handling and powerband. Not ideal for learning. Another problem would be insurance. Somebody mentioned an SV650. That would be a much better choice. If you are interested I am selling my 1993 Katana 750. I have owned it since it was brand new in '93. For a low price of $2,500 it would be great to learn on. It is not a race style motorcycle like a GSXR yet it is still sporty. It has a mild powerband and neutral handling tendencies. For such a low price you could get liability only insurance which would save $$. If you learned on it for a year or so and then upgraded you would have very little invested and would get most of it back at resale. Sorry for the sales pitch but I have got a crush on an R1 and can't have two motorcycles. Here are some recent pics. PM if you would like more info.
-1996+ CBR600 F3 (great first bike and cheap and it will not dissappoint)
-CBR600 F4i (great bike)
-R6 great bike (but not as comfortable as the other two)
C'mon, guys - quit jerking the guy around. The obvious answer is to get a bike that you can use when you're experienced, too. That means that a Hayabusa is the far-and-away best choice - lots of grunt down low and tons of top end. 'Busa all the way!

CBR 600 (F3, F4, or F4i) are all good bikes. You can also get a "naked" bike - usually cheaper. The SV650 is good - you could also consider a Honda 599 or even a Kawasaki Ninja 500R.
