New Owner (2002) Questions re: Alarms, etc.
The production date (start of) for my 2002 model S2000 is today (delivery expected in about 3 weeks). I want to order the hardtop, however the dealer says he has to wait until he gets gets a VIN# (which should be available upon completion of production in a week or so) before the actual order can be submitted to Honda.
I have 2 questions re: accessories.
1) Should I get the Honda alarm system (2001 model price of $448 + labor) or hold off and get an after-market alarm (Viper, etc. discussed on other threads).
2) Are the Honda issued wheel locks ($35 for the 2001 odel) the best way to go?
If you have any other pre-purchase suggestions, I would appreciate them as well.
Thanks, Miles

miles, many say that the Honda alarm system is not worth the money and that aftermarkets have more features (some are cheaper). I've also heard that the Honda alarm can be added on with aftermarket options so either way I think your okay. Poplular opinion says that the Clifford systems are top of the line.
I'd think the wheel locks from Honda are good although any anti-theft device can be defeated with enough effort.
I like the wheel lock nuts because the plating can't be chipped off with an air gun like the regular chrome plated hex nuts. It would be a PITA (and expensive), but cool, to have the lock nuts at every location on the wheels.

I have a 2001 with factory alarm system, including hood sensor. It does not, however, have a proximity alarm. I think I will have that added after-market so people at least attract attention when they reach into the car when the top's down.
I put louder horns on my car and, since the factory alarm uses the car's horns, it's embarrassingly loud to activate and disable the alarm in a crowded public parking lot. Maybe an aftermarket alarm would have some options in that area.

You should check out "handa-accessories.com" for your honda accessories. They're the same, but a whole lot cheaper....especially if you're okay installing everything yourself. If your dealer is offering free installation, then it may balance out. Plus, if you spend $200 at handa-accessories, they'll throw in the wheel locks for $10. I'd order all the accessories I want from the website and negotiate with the dealer to make him install it for free after your car arrives.
good luck

Definitely get an aftermarket alarm. They are much better than the stock Honda alarm. Make sure you get a proximity detector too, so you can keep the top down and not worry about having people stick their hands in the cockpit.

Wheel Locks already claimed - sorry...
I have a set of locks if anyone wants them. These are the Honda ones.
I bought them after my stook's wheels got stolene, but when my car got back they had already put a set on them..
The first person to e-mail me at st6hu@mail.uh.edu with a request gets them
All you have to do is send me a priority mail stamp(I think). I don't think the postage should be more than that.
They are new still in the package..

I'd go with the OEM Honda alarm. It integrates itself well and doesn't give you the false alarms and issues of an aftermarket one.
The immobilizer key will stop most people from taking the car. Put your roof up and arm/lock your car and you'll be fine.

miles,
Since the car has the immobilizer, I decided that the best compliment to this would be the Millenium FX monitor. It sends a signal to a hand held pager if the car is bumped, moved or rocked by someone sitting in it, or if the doors, hood, or trunk would be opened. The pager can vibrate or emit a tone. The display indicates what has happened. The dealer that is installing mine, on Sept. 21, charges $299 installed and say that they can adjust the sensitivity for bump or movement of the car. They also say that the range is greater than the 1/2 mile advertised. This will cover you while in a motel, restaurant and on most shopping excursions. And the system was recommended to me by a person who is very knowledgeable on electronics and was himself recommended by one of the administrators of this site. The reason that I am not interested in a standard alarm is that I have heard too many stories about alarms being disabled and if the owner doesn't actually hear the alarm for the first few moments before it is disabled, the thieves are home free. With the Millenium FX system, you are notified immediately. Hope this helps you decide. Please post your decision on this.
