Can I play a bit of DA here;
Firstly, I think (don't have numbers to hand) that countries with higher speed limits have more accidents on motorways, in comparison to countries with lower limits.
Excessive speed is a factor in some/many accidents.
Many people on our roads are not capable of driving at the speeds they do, and they are taken by surprise when a car moving at much greater speed to them passes them (e.g. they are doing 65, a car passes at 120).
If there is a protest, surely it is against the law that states 70mph is the limit on motorways, not against the police who I imagine, are just doing what they are told?
(BTW I am not a snail as most will know!)

Especially the work done by JJ Leeming into the causes of accidents.
It's quite scary how 'speed' had been used as a general whipping hosre, possibly leading to thousands of unnecessary deaths.
Certainly, it is the slow drivers on motorways that cause accidents. It is the responsibility of the fast driver to slow down for the bloody fool.
Certainly, it is not inasmuch the Police who are the problem (but read Andrew Gilligan's article in the online Spectator about Brunstrom and the Police Party - it's very good!).
But it is time the British public stopped taking it up the arse from politicos without complaint. Especially when profiteering is used as an excuse for not improving road safety

Nick, not disputing that speed gets unfair blame - it's such an easy scapegoat, as are the motorists 
(I speak from experience )
It's just that a lot of people who voice their views end up sounding like spoilt children (not implying that anybody here is doing that) and sulking that they can't have their own way. I don't think 70mph is an appropriate speed limit, but shouldn't we be protesting to the politicians and those who make the decisions - not the numpty's in the vans , or the traffic police, as they can't change anything.
