Default What's the Point of Buying S2K Now?

WARNING: If you don't have 10 minutes, don't start reading.

Wait, let's get one thing clear... I have bought an '05 Silverstone, red/black. In my opinion the S2K is the best car for the money on the market... truly world class. I'm anxiously awaiting delivery. As of 3:30 a.m. my car was on a train going through Thayer, MO.

Now to explain topic of post: Yesterday I called on one of my clients at his office. It was only my second time calling on him, but he seemed pretty cool during our first meeting (over lunch). Our conversation yesterday dealt very little with my product, as we spent the whole time (about an hour) talking cars. Turns out my client is a HUGE car guy. FYI, some years ago he built a sleeper GLI that made the cover of EuroSportsCar(?) Magazine... back then it was called VW-Audi Magazine, or something like that. Anyway, I let him know I'm waiting on my S2K that's literally on a train somewhere. He tells me that he's read the S2K is quite an impressive driver's car and would like if I would bring it by his office once it arrives. Of course I agree cuz I plan on letting the world know I'll be driving an S2K. I ask him what car he likes, as it's obvious he's a car guy (and his current profession typically indicates a step beyond a sleeper VW). He casually mentions his love for the M5 (last V8 version). Said he couldn't acquire one a few years ago, but drove a 540 with a lot of "work" done to it. He spoke in past tense, so i asked what he drives currently. He punched a few keys on his keyboard then spun his monitor around to face me... there he was standing next to the sweetest red 911 turbo in existence. With the biggest grin on my face I asked if he has that car right now. He said it was right outside the window behind him. Trying to keep my composure (I've loved the 911 turbo ever since reading about it at age 12), I just continued to talk about various other incredible driver's cars.

Before leaving his office, I jokingly (seriously) said I would like him to take me for a spin through the parking lot one day when not so busy. Him being a car guy, he said if I had a minute he would take me for a spin right then. I gave the obligatory refusal, but quickly accepted when he insisted. Sports car lovers of the world, the sensation was like none other I've experienced before. He told me it was low on oil and had to warm up a bit before he could get on it. Didn't seem to stop him though. While leaving a stop light, heading up a hill for an on ramp he gets on it. Could swear I felt the tires actually gripping into the pavement... like they had hundreds of steel claws just digging into the ground. And it felt like we were being propelled by magnetic forces... the force and speed was almost tangible. I'm ashamed to say how fast we were going on the interstate, so I'll just say it was at arrest worthy speeds. As thrilling as it was, the ride was also kinda scary. Did I mention this was during lunch hour traffic? The whole time he's giving me a play-by-play commentary.

Anyway, he pulls off an exit for the return trip. Halfway up the onramp he pulls to the side of the road, unbuckles his seatbelt and informs me it's my turn. Of course I look at him dumbfounded, but he again insists, pointing out that as a car guy I would appreciate driving this beast. I buckled into the driver's seat, as excited as I was nervous. I continue up the onramp and merge into traffic with a huge grin aface. Using the sound of the engine and common sense as my guides, I ease into 5th gear (read shifted way early) where I realize there would be no need for sixth. He laughs and says he can't believe I'm in 5th gear and that he never gets higher than third. He urges me to drop it into 3rd, step on it, and wind it out to redline... I obliged and my life will never be the same again. I've never been a top speed kinda guy. I'm more of a getting to the next light quickly and twisty backroads kinda guy. When I glanced over at the speedo (was transfixed on the tach), I was going faster than my client had gone on the first leg of the trip. I had no clue at all I was going so fast. The car just doesn't seem to be content anywhere below 95 mph. Seems like the car was designed to be driven on roads where it would be the only car. The car is truly a monster, with fine leather seats. Oh, and the gearshift is soooooo smooth.

When I pulled into the parking lot, dash messages reminded me the oil was still low and also that the car was not warmed up, yet. Wonder what life is like with 2 warmed up turbos in that car. I only share this story because my many hours of lurking here lead me to believe most S2K drivers are true car folks and would certainly appreciate such an experience.

Again, I'm still verrrrryyy excited to take possession of my S2K, but I gotta say that yesterday's experience won't soon be forgotten. Oh, and as I was leaving his office he reminded me I have to bring my S2K by when I get it cuz he wants to check it out. Sorry so long. Thanks for listening.

First off, congrats on getting one. I'm jealous.. you're beating me by a week.

What's the point of buying the s2k now?

Well, it's $30k versus an amount many times over.... You could always debate over and over that you can wait another few years when you have enough to buy the 'better' car. No doubt, the porsches are nice. But, you're gonna have to spend many times over an S2k to enjoy that thrill.

The point? You're buying it because you like it and you're willing to spend X amount for the car.. that's the point

Thanks for the story Smitty, that's incredible you got to drive such a fine automobile. I'm rather jealous! BTW, I didn't catch the year of the 911? Oh yes, you must post pictures of your new S2K when it arrives; very nice choice of colors I might add; silverstone and red/black - that's HOTTTTTTT....

Jake, you're right... I'm with you.

Tyler, his car has just over 9K miles, said he's had it almost a year. I asked him to pop the engine compartment and it was impeccably clean (not to mention a tight, tight squeeze). My guess is an '04 or '05. Just a side note, when he popped the engine lid I could actually smell oil (more than w/other cars)... and I've owned VW and Audi products. Said he has to top it off pretty often.

What's the point???? Apples to oranges comparison. If you really want a Porsche, you can get a used one for 30k that will satisfy what you're looking for.

All cars are different and have different strengths and weaknesses. I drove a 360 CS several months ago - traded for an hour with the owner. He came back wide-eyed and said he couldn't believe the cost to pick up an S and listed five or six areas where the S would be a more satisfying car.

Compare any car to any other one and there are always reasons to wan the other car.

Oh, by the way, make sure to hit your car with a good clay bar as soon as you get it. The rail car crap can really affect the paint, no matter how hard they try to cover it up. That's one of the benefits of living on the west coast - no train travel - just ship!

Great story, thanks for sharing!

To me, a step up from s2k would be 911s( read, driver's car) or maybe the new Vett. Till then, s2k is all I can afford..

When you get your car, don't forget to check the oil often, for the first 10k, even though AP2 use much less oil than AP1. Break her in right( no VTEC for the first 600 miles), and then you can enjoy her with your client, he'll be very impress what s2k has to offer for such a fair price!

I know how you feel about the Porsche, for my job I get to play around occasionally with some cars...



And...

You can see my miata rotting, waiting to be taken away today.

I am smitten to have the opportunity to drive these beasts. The GT is just too big for me, too much car... On the other hand, the GT2 is in my opinion, one of the best, if not, best sports cars EVER. BUT, if you want fun, the Elise is the funnest! I'm considering getting one later this year (or hopping on to the wait list), along with getting back into Miatas... However, I'm definatly keep in my Honda as it's a the car that'll remain in the middle, it's just fine for what I want out of it.
