Default how do the 4.57 gears work?

why does it help accelerate you and supposedly save gas at slower speeds?

its all about ratios...

do you have a push bike ???

well f you have a really small ring on the front and a BIG ring on the back what does that do ??? it will make you pull away really fast BUT you cant go fast as your legs would be spinning too fast.

if you had the middle ring at the front and the BIG one at the back, how would that compare ??? you would not pull away so quickly BUT you can go faster.

it basically works on that princable, it changes the gear ratios so you have greater acceleration, BUT the slight down side to that is it uses more fuel to get to the same speed and it does reduce top end speed.

i hope that helps

i will try find out some more detailed info for you

Considering you are going to be operating at higher revs to achieve the same speeds one would think it would use, as ADAM_ROB_UK said, slightly more gas not less.

Better acceleration=yes.
Forget about saving gaz;your engine is always revving higher for any given speed!

I've been considering getting these gears also, but how would this effect the 04 S considering our gears are already pretty short? Would it be worth it for the 04 as a good mod? Any 04 owners that have done this.

Actually, it depends on your daily drive route(s) and your habit. Xviper has definitely reported IMPROVED MPG with his higher gearing. Here's roughly why:

If you drive mostly interstate and are in 6th gear alot, you will have LOWER MPG as it will be at a higher RPM.

However, if you drive mostly 'city' and are rarely in 6th... you may get better MPG as you may find that you are 'cuising' in the next higher gear up in the same locations where you were in a lower gear near your shift point "comfort". IE, since each gear revs higher, you may find when you are casually driving around that you naturally shift into the next higher gear -- still getting the same basic Tq & HP output that you were getting in the higher rpm/lower gear...but now you're getting it from the lower RPM/high gear...thus delivering better MPG.

That make sense?

i'm gunna pick these up. i also had the same concerns as you so i am still debating 4.44 or 4.57, but i might go w/ the 4.57 because it is supposedly made of stronger material, and the difference between the 4.44 at this point would be minimal.

let us know how it goes once done. I'm curious to know about the performence difference, but mainly how it would be on normal day to day driving. Cruising at highway speeds at 70 the 04 is already at a pretty high rpm, so my concern is how much higher would it be with the 4.57's.

Exactly! Where I may have driven in 3rd before, I may now be using 4th at the same speed, just to keep the rpms a little lower (for sedate driving around town).

I need help guys. I have an AP1 S and live on a small island of 108 square miles, I do a lot of drag racing and would like some more acceleration. Which gear upgrade would best suite me 4.44, 4.57, or 4.77?
