Default Grease ...

For those of you with rattles and squeaks ...

I recently had a driver's door rattle diagnosed as a "stress" or "friction" creak. The dealer had failed to sort it on the previous visit, so the service manager came out for a spin with me and suggested it was a creak from the door striker/closer mechanism. I could have sworn it was something rattling against the glass inside the door when the window was down, but sure enough, a few squirts of 3-in-ONE oil into the door mechanism and the rattle/creak was gone.

Having been so wrong about the source of the door rattle, this morning I decided to go round all the cabin rubber seals/bushes with some 3-in-ONE Silicone Spray. I sprayed it on to a J-Cloth and went round the car, wiping every piece of rubber I could see. I'm assuming it's the equivalent of the Shinetsu stuff that the dealers recommend, only cheaper. On Beardie's recommendation, I also went round my roof mechanism with some 3-in-ONE White Lithium Grease as well. Hellfrauds stock the 3-in-ONE range, btw.

Wow! It's like being in a funeral home. No rattles, squeaks or any offputting noises.

So today's top tip is ... get out those lubricants and get busy

3-in-one, lube, grease, "like being in a funeral home" (euphemism for being surrounded by stiffies)...

Anything you'd like to confess Shiskine?

I've got a couple of creaks from the roof, so do you spray it on the roof mechanism joints?

And does it not get on the roof?

Yeah which points of the roof are you lubing and it is literally all the rubber on the car body?

Too easy - Steve - Too easy!

Kelk - yeah all the rub but don't go made as silicon is a swine to get off the wrong places

With the Lithium I spray the moving joints in the roof with the roof down and a bit of paper behind it to stop overspray.

Exactly what I did. Just used the little tube in the top of the can and directed the spray into all the hinges and joints on the roof mechanism. You need to be careful as the grease is, as the name suggests, white and it will look naff if it gets on visible surfaces. I just wiped down the hinges to remove any white residue when I was done. Apparently lithium grease is good as it lasts a while.

As for the slilcone stuff, I just wiped it on to all the soft rubber seals/surfaces round the roof and doors, plus any points in the door surround where there might be friction.
