Any chance of Honda discontinuing S2000 next year?
My stepfather went into a dealer yesterday to look at the S2000. They don't have any 2002's in yet, so they showed him and let him drive a 2001. The dealer told him that Honda may discontinue production of the S2000 after the 2002 model year. Is this nothing more than a salesman's desparate attempt at a sale (buy it now, while you can), or is there any truth to this? I have not seen any mention of this possibility here or anywhere else.
Thanks!
Thanks!
and so it begins again...

"people please, when we went to Japan we were told that the S2K would be made for at least X years."
"the S2K will, in fact, be made next year."
"i'll eat my hat if it's made next year."
"i have a copy of the Honda sales materials for next year and the S2K is in it."
"i'll believe it when i see it."
"woo-hoo!!! the S2K will be made another year. the following changes will occur."
"damn it - i never should have invested in the S2K."

Yes, this is desperation at its finest!
The S2000 will be made for many many years to come...at least that's what both Honda and Mugen engineers told us personally in Tokyo...they could be wrong, though...this idiot salesman is probably correct...

Car manufacturers are always pretty secretive about what their plans actually are ... competitive advantage and all that ...
There is always the POSSIBILITY that Honda MAY not make the S2000 next year ... or it MIGHT not be brought to the US next year ...
However, it seems much more likely (to me) that Honda will keep cranking out S2000s as long as it makes financial sense for them to do so ... and I don't see any reason for them to quit now ...
I'd also be curious to know why Honda would go through the major expense (R&D and production changes) of the 2002 changes for the last production year of a car ...
It should be noted that I had a dealer tell me 2000 was going to be the only year ... then several told me that 2001 was absolutely the last year ... "There's no way I can let you have this car at that price you see, because ..."
Have fun,
Derek

This is the step-father of Mike in Atlanta talking. To add to the discussion, another dealer in Salt Lake City said that 2002 was the last year. Something about discontinuing the S2000 in favor of a sports car by Acura coming out shortly. But nobody seems to know for sure. They will produce it in 2002 for sure, as they already have a brochure out for 2002 with announced changes.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of owning an S2000 if they discontinue it? Any thoughts?
