Default My stereo quote

After a bit of searching, I've found a place I trust doing my stereo install. I 'd like to do it myself, but I know I don't have the patience or talent. There are not a lot of options in my area, so I was unable to sample all the equipment manufacturers.

This place has done seven S2000s, and offered me phone numbers for reference. That is, once they check with the owners first. Evidently this is a common practice there

I regret not listening to Focal Speakers due to their wide support here. The nearest dealer is over 2 hours away. Plus, there's that budget thing.

Here's what I'm looking at. Stealth is important to me, so I don't want to go too crazy. I appreciate any thoughts or comments. I've listed prices, however I feel comfortable there's a little negotiation room lower. I'm also willing to pay a small premium to purchase from a local dealer for support, service, and install.

Head Unit:
Eclipse CD5435 $389 installed
http://www.eclipse-web.com/cd/cd5435.html

w/Sirius Option
w/Audio in for iPod [not iPod controller] $149 installed

Amplifier
Eclipse 2/1 Power Amp
w/ DB Elite Amp kit
http://www.eclipse-web.com/amp/pa4212.html $381 installed

Speakers
Diamond Audio M361
http://www.diamondaudio.com/products/index...&type=29&line=3
$320 installed

DCI - Eclipse style

No places I went to replaced speaker wires as a matter of course. Is it worth doing?

No places I went to had the power come from the battery direct [except the amp]. That is, they want to use the factory power in the harness for the radio. One store even said that would be a fire hazard. Any thoughts?

I welcome all comments!

I have the CD5435 in the S2000 and am pretty happy with it. When I bought that unit, I also picked up the CD445 for my daily driver. The 8445 is AWESOME. If you can justify the cost, the 8V preouts do make a difference.

Nice components though; it should sound great.

They are correct. There should be a constant hot wired to some source, though, for the retention of settings and the clock. Other than that, stock wiring should suffice.

Agreed - my alpine HU runs direct to the battery!

I also have an Alpine HU. I ran my power wire directly to the battery as Alpine recommends. I wouldn't think that I need it because my internal amp is off, but I did it just the same.

Actually, no. Some HU's (Alpine mostly) want a second constant run all the way to the batt.

Has to do with the power of the onboard amp. They claim it's to strong for the stock wiring.

Some of the Alpine's come with a larger gauge wire (fused) and it's labeled to send to the batt. And the manual will also state it must go to the batt.

Can you get away with running it somewhere else? Sure. But you run the risk of popping fuses and a slim chance of messing up the headunit in such a way as to void the warranty on it.

Safest answer, if the book says to run it to the batt, and you want your warranty, run it to the batt.

*Quick Edit* What he said above is true in most situations. My comments were about certain HU's.

About the "fire hazard" comment, it isn't a fire hazard if installed correctly. You fuse it as close to the batt. as possible. This way, if you get a short, the fuse pops. If it's un-fused then, yes, the wire would heat up under the short (all a light bulb, or electric heater for that matter, is is a controlled short circuit. An un-fused wire, if shorted out and allowed to heat up, could potentially set the car on fire.

It isn't common but it's very possible.
I have an Alpine 9813 in my S2000, the power wire that Alpine wants connected to the battery can't be larger than 14 or 16 gauge. There is absolutely no reason to run that wire to the battery. If the radio was really drawing enough current through that wire to pop the radio fuse, that crappy wire would melt.

Also, pop the cover off the radio and see what size wire it uses INSIDE the deck. I bet it's really, really small.

I think Alpine is full of shit.

Do you even understand why there are different size of wire?? Comments like that make you look just crazy...

Oh an actually that wire is pretty large inside the deck also... I think your though process and end result are full of crap.

If your using the internal amp you should by all means run the power wire to the battery.
