Default Wanted an S2K, Will Settle for a WRX...

Guys...I dunno if today is a sad day or a good day.

I think reality has set in.

Since I won't be funding my new car purchase completely personally, my parents seem to have a say in my choice.

Therefore, at ~$10,000 less, I think I may have to 'settle' for a WRX.

I keep trying to convince myself that it's not that bad a drop, and on paper, it really isn't.

I lose RWD, but I gain AWD.

I lose a convertible, but I gain more room.

I lose a 6 spd close ratio transmission, but I gain a 5 spd with more low-end torque.

I lose some 'wow' factor and looks, but I gain a standard turbo.

Overall, I gain $10,000 (WRX MSRP $23,999).

I know, in the deepest parts of my heart, that even though on paper they are rather evenly matched (even with the S2K having 13 more stock HP), the S2K is the better of the two...

But again, it's really not all my choice, and I'll have to settle for a WRX.

I guess what I'm looking for is for some people here to convince me that it's not all that bad...and that a WRX is a damn fine car...

Can anyone help?

Another positive I can think of is that since it's ten grand lighter, I can spend some extra dough on meaningful mods and make it even nicer.

It's late.

I'm out.

You're comparing tenderloin to hamburger. If you want an S2000, why not tell mommy and daddy that you'll work real hard to make up the difference in the price of the two. Can you say job? Sure you can.

The WRX is a damn fine (although damn ugly) sporty sedan or wagon.

The S2000 is a damn fine sports car.

Put a piggyback chip on the WRX, learn how to drive really well, and start making some $$ so next time it is completely your own damn fine decision what to buy...

Life is about compromises. . . you might as well get used to it and learn to look for the bright side.

If you're going to be spending 10K to upgrade the WRX to make it "nicer," might as well convince your parents you'll take the 10K and the S2K now and pay them back at a later point in time.
I lose some 'wow' factor and looks
You will be losing more than $10K's worth right here. You know them Mastercard commercials on these days?

Priceless.

Besides not being:

-Convertable
-2 seat roadster
-6 speed
-9000RPM
-RWD
-Naturally aspirated
-Pleasing to look at

the WRX is ok.

I think that if you are willing to give up the above then the S2000 is not the right car for you. Buy the WRX, you'll be happy with it. If you want most of the above however but can't afford the S2000 you might want to look at an MR2 or MX5 Miata. You might also want to consider an E36 or E30 M3.

a couple of good choices in the under$25K department other than the WRX are the:

Acura RSX-s
Celica GTS

Hey... I know times have changed and comparisons can indeed be odious but if my mom and dad had bought me something as acceptable as a WRX, I'd have been over the moon. The best I ever got was a bike.

A others have said, if you really want the car, you wouldn't hesitate to do what was necessary to earn the difference. You'd probably appreciate it a lot more too when it represented some of your own hard earned.

Well quite frankly I got my S2k for 28k. Only 4k more than you are going to spend. So IMHO I think its a poor choice. But you gotta do what you gotta do.

I know...every single word all of you said is true...and I completely agree...the S2K is still the better of the two...

But in terms of choice...it's a little more complicated than that...

I do work (between 40-50 hrs/week), but I work for my father, and so I don't get paid at all.

In return, I get a roof over my head, food on the table, my insurance paid...things like that...

On top of that, I go to school full time, and I try hard to get good grades (Dean's List, Golden Key Scholar, Blue Key Scholar)...and hopefully law/graduate school next year...so I'm no slouch

But damn...it's like there's a lump in my throat and I feel bad because it's like I'm lying to myself...convincing myself that a WRX is equal to an S2K.

I know it's not.

But I hope you guys don't get the image of me as a spoiled little kid with mommy and daddy paying for everything...I'm not that kinda guy...

While my bro got his choice of a GS-R a few years back (albeit $22K), and my parents got their choices of cars...I was still stuck with my '89 Accord for 5 years.

So anyway...don't wanna ramble...but maybe there's a slight chance of me getting an S2K...

Don't wanna waste your time either guys...

I'm out

p.s. - have great weekends
