Interesting install. I've asked the board with the same idea of using the bare trunk well as the enclosure while mounting and sealing a MDF board on top. No one seemed to think the thin metal of the trunk well would be good for an enclosure for two subs. I'm very curious to hear how your install comes out. Please keep us informed when the install is complete!
Has he reinforced the well at all?(such as spray deadening material)
Aren't there some plastic holes in the bottom that will get popped out?
Why vinyl/red carpet?! Just hope you do not scratch the vinyl!!!!

The well is pretty thick metal and has a coating of rubber sealant on it, its then painted over from the factory. we covered it with carpet on the inside to help prevent rattles. We still havent heard it because we are doing the amp today. we will work on sound isolation when we get it done. As far as scratching the vinyl, I pretty much dedicated my self to not using the trunk when I decided to put two subs in the floor. I have used the tire tub for several boxes and havent had good succes using the cars body as the enclosure. We will see in a few more hours. The amp rack is built now, My installer is doing the deck wiring and finish work.
Hey nice looking install, infact, that is how I would have done it if I were to do something simple and custom.
heren are a few suggestions:
1. using the metal as the enclosure if fine, I have heard quite a few sets up like it and its fine...but you need to make sure that these things are covered:
1. lay dynamat or equiivalment on the floor the well, lay it on relatively thick, 3 layers would be my suggestions.
2. sealed the joint air tight, I prefer to use heavy duty silicone, but if you want to preserve teh metal of your trunk bottom, perhaps siloconing to the dynamat is a better idea. because it really STICKS to the bare metal, and when you go to pull it out somet ime in the future, you will find that you will probably tear parts of the paint right out of the car. and its a real pain in the butt too.
3. I would trim the sub with soething other than carpet, easiet thing is to use vinyl, you can get generic red vinyl at joann';s fabrics for very cheap, if you are concenred that the wood has holes or some other inperfections that will show through the vinyl when you lay it down, lay down a layer of carpet first, and then vinyl, that way it will be smooth. two other trimming materials that I would think about, those they are harder to work with, is plexiglass, and aluminum sheets.
an example of simple vinyl trim can be found at this link, its a simple install I did for someone a while back, very low cost custom install:

take care, and it looks great!

Yeah, we didnt have the right size port, we picked it up today.
We were going to go with the red vinyl but for some reason it didnt look right, it just didnt quite match. Anyway, were trying to follow some of the design ques from the interior into the trunk.
Which as it turns out is harder than I thought.

well after three days including two all nighters the system is done.
The trunk well as it turns out makes an excellent enclosure if sealed properly. now If i could get my trunk lid to seal properly. I have a strange problem guys, TOO MUCH BASS! oh well, I guess Ill have to turn it down sometimes. heres a few pics of the finished install. Enjoy.
