Default HD-DVD

Haven't had too much time to play with the Toshiba A1, but so far I like it. The upscaling on most SD DVD's is pretty darn good. Armageddon definitely benefits.

My two HD-DVD's- Apollo 13 and Serenity- weren't overly awe-inspiring. Serenity is not a good movie(IMO), but it has some pretty sharp scenes. I watched Apollo 13 while very tired. I think after watching live spporting events so often in HD, that the eye thinks all things should be that sharp and bright, alas film is not.

All the standard gripes apply to this 1st gen player- remote sucks, slow start-up, big, etc. Fortunately I have not had any "freezes" occur like some others have reported. The player has plenty of room to breathe, and I'm sure that helps.

For reference, I am using HDMI connection to my media receiver for the Pioneer 1130 plasma and optical to my Denon receiver. I haven't upgraded to a receiver with HDMI in/out.

Anyone else have one? Your thoughts?
