Also is using a beach towel, deep socket and rubber mallet method ok w/ the head still on? (cylinder pressurized of course) or should I use the spring compressor to remove the springs too.

Haven't done retainers on an S2k but there's one tip I picked up working on my miata that may or may not apply here. Before compressing each valve spring, I put a deep socket over the retainer and tap it lightly with a hammer. Don't hit it too hard as the valve will slam back to its seat. If done right, this will free some potentially sticky keepers in the retainer that could pop out in a bang when compressing the spring.

if you arent using specific tools for the job, make sure you have a magnet handy down near the keeper also. It can be a bitch to try and track down a keeper that has shot off the valve to somewhere else in the head.

 

I agree a magnet makes picking up the keepers easier but I don't think the keepers would shot out in a sudden.

Not sure if the S is any different, but with my miata if I tap each retainer with a socket and a hammer (better than a mallet 'cuz you need a small "impact" instead of a small "blow") beforehand, the retainer will slowly sink and slowly revealing the keepers. They don't pop up in a surprise.

When you do this you should do a step by step for everyone else that might consider doing this. It would help anyone thinking about doing this out a heapful.

 

Please, enlighten us if you have completed the service with the head in place.
