Default 4th Gear Pop Out-->Dealer doesn't know why HELP!!!

Ok Guys, I've read all the other posts of people having this problem. I have 12K mi. and it happens SEMI-FREQUENTLY. Of course, when I take it into the dealership(Autowest Honda in Roseville, CA), they can't duplicate the problem. They said that they can't do anything unless it's duplicated, why can't they just take my word for it???? I need the folks who have had this fixed to help me out, maybe they can give me the dealership's number who fixed the problem so that I can have mine call them. This will be my 3th trip to the shop for the same problem. Someone please help.

From what I've seen on here, no one has really had it fixed yet...but I might have missed a post or two. I've been waiting to see, because I have it it occasionally, but am not under warranty - curious how much it costs to fix.

There are only two likely causes:

1. You miss the shift. Check for an elbow obstruction or a soda in the cupholder next time. Also try to ensure that you had the shifter firmly grasped.
2. There is a bent shift fork. This is easy to see if the transmission is apart but unlikely to happen unless the dealer can be sure of finding a warrantable part inside.

One option is for you to ask them to ask the zone rep to pay for a teardown.

Other reasons for your problem are highly unlikely.

I had the problem as did others. Occurred when in fourth with a hot transmission and no load (neither accelerating or deceleration) and it would just slip out by itself.

Took it in to my dealer and described the problem.. they called the tech line and was told a new gear, fork, and few other things. The fix was done and the problem is gone.

So Honda Tech knows about it? Wonder how much it is to get fixed, any idea?

If this is at all similar to the 5th gear popout problems SE-R owners experienced, then it is a failing sychronizer.

I wonder if Honda made any gear changes (input teeth length, height of the gear, and such) in the last few years.

Hard to believe that. Synchronizers are used to match the speed of gears being engaged, thus the name 'synchronizer', but normally have nothing to do with them staying engaged.

Doesn't have to be the synchro itself; anyhow, below's the link to the SE-R 5th gear popout problem. Check the engagement/disengagement pictures of first gear synchro (notice the teething differences).

Click here for the SE-R popout problem explanation and pictures...

I know it's not the same car, but you can kinda get an idea considering it's a similar problem.

I've had bad/worn thrust bearings cause similar problems on other vehicles.
