Possible New S2k Owner, Is It A Good Deal??? Would Like Your Help
I have been waiting for this day since I first heard about the S2k and would appreciate your input. Financial reasons forced me to exercise patience in waiting to buy an S2k. Armed with a perfect negotiating position: it is the end of the year, a bad economy, and the beginning of winter in New England. A local Honda dealership had 3 new 2001 S2k's.
The one I wanted was the Red one and I knew that it had been sitting on the lot at this dealership for roughly 5 months because I drive by everyday. On average dealerships begin losing money on cars after 60 days if costs are allocated by sqft. Anyway I negotiated my position and just put a deposit on a new 2001 Red/Black, no options, with 1,100 dealer demo miles for $28,000.
I think this was a good deal, but wanted to ask for other member opinions if you have a moment, before I write the final check and close the deal on 12/28. For I am a graduate student and this really is my life savings that I am using to buy this phenomenal automobile.

jman: I think this sounds like an excellent deal, but I (and maybe others on this site) would not buy this particular car, with this many dealer miles on it. If it was sold by a private individual, I would have no problems with it, for it was likely broken in properly and taken care of. But, a dealer has put all these miles on it? I doubt it was broken in properly, and I'm sure it has been dogged
If you can live with this, then by all means, go for it. If this bothers you and may disturb you in the future, do not buy it. I think I read on this site recently where a brand new '02 was picked up for just over $29k. You are right, this is great timimg for you, and there is no reason why you shouldn't be able to get an awesome deal on a '02 - perhaps for only $1000 more than this one??
Good luck!

it sounds like its a great deal, but i am not familiar with the current new england market so take my opion with a grain of salt. its hard to believe a practically new 2001 red has been sitting on dealer's lot for more than 5 months. that means the car has been there since july/august when roaster sale was hot. it makes me wonder if there is anything wrong with this dealership or the car itself. in any case, if the car has been there for 5 months, you should be able to get the car for less than invoice especially when the dealer has 2 more 2001 on the lot. good luck.
The number of miles concerns me.
You spending lots of saved income is something I understand.
Keep in mind for just about 4k more you could get a 2002 with about 0 miles.
If the 4k more pushes you over the margin I understand.
Yes the S2000 is an incredible car!!!
You might want to look around at other New England and New York State Dealers, There are lots of 2001s on the floor with no potential owners in sight. In fact try Holtz Honda, rpatterson@johnholtzhonda.dealerspace.com, tell him Doug sent you! I really do not wish to rain on your parade because the S2000 is a great car but the 1,100 miles is not a great thing. This is an engine that will reward you if it is broken in properly.
REMEMBER- the people here are here to help. PM me if there is anything I can do!

Don't walk..........run from that deal!!! 1100 dealer miles on this type of car is equal to 110,000
Look around and find one with 0 miles. I wouldn't recommend this car be purchased as a demo at all. I think in the long run you will be unhappy b-cause it wasn't broken in properly. I test drove several S2000's and although I didn't go to VTEC, I did push them pretty hard. Not all people care about the future owner. Cavet Empor

Bronx Honda (718-892-3300) had an ad in yesterday's NY Post for a new 2001 S2000 for $28,695. They say they have a website at http://www.bronxhonda.com. Before I continued with your deal, I would call these guys. A train from South Station to Penn Station, taxi to the Bronx, and drive the 200 miles back to Wellesley. Worth a phone call.
That car has likely been thrashed HARD. Even more importantly, I question the wisdom of sinking your life savings into a car...as cool as the S2K is, it's not worth sacrificing your financial future. I'd wait until it can be purchased w/ current income or "fun money".
I would think this is not too bad of a deal, just look at EBAY.
But, a question I have is that if you should not get the engine over 5000rpm's before 600 miles, why would you want to get any S2000 that has been test driven or used as a demo? I would think that most salesmen would want to show you what the car can do and so not follow break-in procedures.
