Thumbs up AP2 transmission swap to AP1

I know there 1 more synchro in those newer trannys and I've noticed a few owners on here with AP2 trannys on their AP1s. Is it just used for more peace of mind or is there any difference in the ratio?

Where can I get my hands on one? Is the for sale section my best bet?

Also will this be worth the coin I'm going to drop onb it?

The reason why AP1 owners are putting AP2 trannies into there cars has nothing to do with the number of syncros in them. It has to do with the change in the ratio of the secondary reduction gear. This makes the first 4 gears act like you've got about 4.3 Final Drive. Honda then changed the ratios of gears 5 and 6 so that highway cruising rpms remained more or less the same as before the reduction gear was changed.

Not sure what you're asking specifically. To do this tranny swap, you really don't need any parts (except maybe a couple bottles of fluid). You only need to take off your existing output flange and switch it with the other tranny's output flange. However, doing this is not unlike doing a clutch job, so if you're going through this, you may as well put in a better clutch (if you actually need one).

You can get a brand new AP2 tranny is around 2k, they go for less at junkyards, but AP1 trannys are still far cheaper.

I've been told by a US dealer that it's more than double that.

the reason you stated xviper sounds like a great reason to get an AP2 tranny, it would be a noticable difference in acceleration im sure combined with my 4.57 gears and the ratios in 5 and 6 will help my gas mileage...

now someone wreck their AP2 with a low mile tranny please!

I've been waiting for a while for one to show up locally. I've pretty much given up and was just about to go out and buy a brand new one from the dealer. I'm still wrestling with whether or not I'll keep the car long enough to enjoy this mod.

With 4.57s and an AP2 tranny in an AP1 car, the first 4 gears would act like you've got 4.7 FD and gears 5 and 6 would be "like" you had 4.4 FD. (These are rough estimates as I haven't done the actual math to be precise.)
