Default Does your clutch "growl"?

Hi Guys

Had my Silver/Red about a month and seem to have developed (or was it there all the time?) a very communicative clutch.

The symptoms:

When changing gear and depressing the clutch, the first few mm of clutch travel are accompanied by a growling noise. This only occurs if my right foot is on the accelerator ie. in the process of lifting off / on the gas.

The other "test" is for example to stay in 4th gear, with foot slightly on gas, and press the clutch a few mm - same noise.

Also, the noise is there when manouvering in 1st / Reverse!

Changing with no gas at all (more difficult than you first think) - there is no noise!

Does your car do this? Any ideas?

Thanks!

John

The car seems to make all sorts of "geary" "growling" sounds at low speed - especially in first (first gear sounds like an old mini one IMHO)

- but I'm never sure if that's the S2000 noise that you bought along with the 250hp. In the first months of owning the car it annoyed me - I didn't notice it during the test drive because I was thinking of other things. I got used to it and now I don't even notice it. However I am wondering if you hear every mechanical thing because you are encased by all this rotating equipment with little insulation - or is it a big problem developing?

I would like to have a ride in other S2000 to compare noises and potential problems - not too practical idea though.

I definitely get the "Mini" whine in First and Second at low revs!

This is more of a growling noise - I don't know any other way to describe it......

If by growl you mean a kind of gurgle noise, that's normal. I kind of like it. (Unlike the problem noise I've got.)

There is some transmission noise when moving in 1st/reverse. It's lessened with the new -55 spec clutch (which you've got if it's a MY2002 anyway). It's hard to tell if it's a problem or not. Best thing might be to see if there's an owner near you and compare cars, or if you're worried take the dealer out for a ride.

Mine is a month old today. I see I am only 30-40 miles away from you - if you want to compare - shout!
Just don't convince me that I have noises which I haven't noticed

Plenty of noise in Neutral, which goes when I dip the clutch.

Mine growls in most gears, as you say just that first few mm of travel causes the gears to give quite a meaty growling sound before going back to normal once you lift off the clutch or press further.
I regularly do it when lifting off slowly to try and keep the change smooth.
Personally I like the sound of it, and touch wood, don't appear to have the other nasty sound so I guess my clutch is ok at present (I hope)

Yep, mine has the same gurgle/growl... and I like it also.
Sometimes I make it growl on purpose as the normal exhaust nosies are a little tame.

Guys

Thanks for your feedback - maybe I'm too paranoid - I had the top down this morning and the "growl" was lost amongst the myriad of other noises!

BTW, the "ECU reset" trick also seems to have cured my other little niggle, which was that the transition to VTEC had trailed off - it still pulled strongly, but there was less kick. That's back now - maybe we need to develop a switch under the bonnet that allows us to regularly reset the ECU, when checking oil etc!

Hmmm, a user programmable car.........

Thanks again.

Johnny

I have just noticed that you are in Billingshurst. What you doing on March 16th? How do you fancy a (short drive) over to Bolney at lunchtime - there is a big Japanese car meeting at the Bolney Stage. Composite Guru and I will be there to fly the S2000 flag - but 3 cars would be even better..................
