VAFC Tuned...Great gains...Plus questions!
OK this last weekend I made it to the dyno shop to tune my VAFC. It really wasn't that hard to tune it and I will be scanning and posting my dyno charts later tonight. I made some really good gains. I gained 10-15 tq from 2000-4000RPM and had 2-5tq gains thoughout the rest of the powerband. In the HP department I gained 10 from 2000-4000RPM and then made 2-5hp gaines the rest of the power band until 7750RPM from 7750RPM I gained anywhere from 5hp at 8000RPM to gaining 25hp from 8500 on. The way my graph looks now I never dip below 200hp from 7500RPM on. I ended up going from 195hp and 132tq as my stock baseline to 200hp and 137tq with the installation of the AEM. And ended up at 207.5 and 138.1 with tuning. And the gains for the Area Under the Curve are huge. Anyway I am glad to have gained so much for under $1000 in mods. I know that there is more power in her but I didn't have time to fine tune the setting seeing as I was already on the dyno for 3 1/2 hours. I'll be going back in a month or so to fine tune her. Now my questions.
First off my original baseline graph with the AEM on had some of what I call spikes that my orginal dyno did not have. Now that it is tuned on both my tq and hp I have many many spikes...the best way to explain this spike is at 3000RPM for instance I'm making 68hp but at 3050 im making 64hp and at 3100 I'm making 69 and at 3150 im making 65...etc. Originally the dyno guy said that usually means detonation...but we didn't hear any and my air/fuel graph is very smooth so he said everything should be ok. Does anyone else have these spikes?
Second off when we dyno'ed my car we noticed something very weird. I would put in my new changes to the VAFC and the start the car and do three runs. We noticed that the first run was always very very lean (in the 15-16 area)...then next run was about a point richer (in the 14-15 area) and then the third run the air fuel mixture was right where it should be (in the 13-14 area). Then every run after that it sayed almost the exact same as the third run. Why is this? Is the computer getting used to the new fuel settings or something. What we eventually ended up doing to remedy this was change the settings...run through the gears on the dyno a few times to get it set and then do the actual dyno and this made our results much more consistant. Does anyone have an explination for why this happens?
That's it guys...graphs will be posted tonight.

C L,
I have been thinking about the VAFC. Did the dyno guy make any comments about whether the settings should be changed for summer in Arizona? I am a little worried that leaning out the engine may cause detonation or other problems when the temperatures get over 110 degrees.
