Passport 8500 Radar Detector
I must have reset this thing 100 times, but during acceleration (usually before or during Vtec) the laser detector just goes nuts. It can be extremely distracting so I often I just turn the unit off, making my rather expensive unit nothing more than dash decoration.
I have a non-functioning shift beeper, and this might have something to do with this. The problem seems to be getting worse. Does anyone have any similiar experience, and what did you do about it?

You might just send it back to Escort and have them check it out. It could be something as simple as a bad circuit board or a bad laser sensor.
I've had my 8500 x50 over a year and sent mine back a few months ago because it wouldn't go out of Self Calibration Mode. I called and got a return number and it turned out the antenna needed to be re-tuned. However, when I got it back, it ran okay for a day or two and then failed again. I called once more and spoke with their customer service (got a REAL voice, not a recording) told them what happened and they mailed me a prepaid return UPS label. They ended up replacing the antenna and had it back in just a few days and included a new suction cup mount and power cord at no charge! Pretty cool, n'est pas!?
I am VERY happy with Escorts customer service, despite the fact I had to return it...hey, stuff happens. If you're not sure what's wrong with it, give them a call (their number's on the website and in the back of your owners manual) and see about sending it in for service.

Odd.....my V1 doesnt do that. By that statement (your car is setting it off), shouldnt my V1 do it as well?
I think it might be a defect in the radar. Call up Escort and see what they have to say. There is definetely something wrong, and you are NOT the first person with this problem.

This is right off the Escort Website:

Laser Falsing
It is unusual to get false laser warnings. Some cars and other electronics put out more RF interference than others and that interference may cause a false laser alert when certain devices are used. Although rare, using the horn, windshield wipers, or accelerating, can generate RF interference in some vehicles. Does it do the same thing in other cars/trucks? New cell phones, new cars with laser adaptive cruise control, and the wind-shear equipment at some major airports can also cause false laser alerts.
If you are experiencing false laser alerts of this type, please call our Customer Service Department at 800-543-1608 and they will give you a repair authorization number and instructions on how to return to us. We will be able to make modifications to your detector that will help.
