i was trying to find a place where i could mount this without it being obtrusive, yet still be apart of the interior somehow so it is easily accessible and able to easily be read/configured. i decided to mount it in my center console.. and here is what i did:

test fitting to make sure it fits in the actual spot...looks good to me



checking out underneath to make sure im not going to get in the way of anything important. also checking out the "depth" and how much the unit can go down.



making the trace for the cut



making the actual cut...



after that, i took a dremel and cut away the plastic 1/8" (.125") more on each side, but made sure to not cut the perforated leather. this way i could kind of push the extra leather up against the unit when installed and it'd have a cleaner look. after setting it into the console i also used some dabs of silicone to hold it in place.

this is what i ended up with:



i ran the wire underneath the leather console part all the way through the head unit area and into the back where i have a boomslang harness that meets up to the afc connection right at the back of the head unit. i installed it as far forward as possible because i think i might be mounting my boost/oil pressure gauges behind it in the future.. still deciding

took about 45 minutes to do it all.

 

cool, looks pretty clean, but how come you put it in the middle of the armrest? was it so that your elbow wouldnt hit it while shifting? aesthetically, IMO it would look nicer up towarsd the top of the leather console, near the two buttons, but if it makes it a pain in the arse to drive, then its all good.

for a clean install. i am planning to do the same when mounting my v-afc, but i am yet to buy a harness and get it all wired up.

 

i would have put it up higher near the buttons but if you see there are the two clips that hold the console down in place right there.. look in the 2nd pic you can see, i moved it up as far forward as i could. thanks though!

 

What are those two extra buttons behind the cupholder?

 

one is a defroster for the hardtop.. the other is blank button, i'm sure i'll come up with something else to put there in the future, perhaps an EJECT PASSENGER button if i can come up with a way to rig rockets under the seat

i have an axial flow short shifter too thats why it might be sittin so low.

 

I have a center console with the cut out for a VFAC and have debated on using it becuase I was afraid I would bump the VAFC with my elbow while I was driving and mess up a setting or two.

i'm 6'0 with normal sized arms, and with my hand on the shifter with my entire arm/elbow rested on the console, it just BARELY clears my elbow.. so if yours is above where mine is, it will probably hit. all my controls are on the right, so theres nothing i'd really bump if i did... and you cant really mess up any settings in the display gauges mode. besides, you shouldnt be resting your hand on the shift knob anyways
