I know theere are many cars in the market with an engine start button. Was the S2000 the first modern/recent release?

Far as I know. It was on the prototypes. The reviewers all wrote about how much they liked the racy feel that it gave to the car, so Honda decided to keep it.

That would depend on your definition of modern.

My 62 MG had a pull start button. It used a cable to pull the starter solenoid. It was very hard to pull in the wintertime so I replaced it with a push start button from an 64 model MG.

"Save $131,465 on a Start Button

START

In a tip of the cap to British sports cars of the '60s, several automakers are replacing the ignition switch with an Engine Start button in high-end roadsters. Check them out in the 2003 Honda S2000, Aston Martin DB7, Cadillac XLR, and BMW Z8. Yes, you still have to insert a key and turn it to the On position. But then you get the fun of pressing a button to fire up the engine. Now, I don't have $131,500 lying around to buy a Z8, but I can afford a $35 "Engine Start" accoutrement (Honda part No. 35881-S2A-911) for my trusty, if rusty, 1989 Civic. I crimped three wires to the back of the button, running one to the starter lead, another to a grounding bolt, and the third to the engine fuse. Then I stepped on the clutch and turned the key. Deep breath. I pushed the button. Vroom, vrrrooooom! Not long ago, I was determined to put the old Honda out to pasture - now it's ready for Le Mans.
