Default S2000 Fire

It had been a heavy storm. The S was moved into the garage to avoid the hail. However, in typical Tennessee fasion, the sky was clear and the sun was shining. Perfect time for a drive!

Having just pulled through a long straight (No squaling tires, no redlining), I let the revs wind down and took it easy, downshifted to third for a turn. Slightly after, smoke, and LOTS of it. Panic and denial followed. I left a nice long oil streak. Fire licked slightly around the oil filter. It was more focused under the airbox. With the help of several passersby, it was doused with water bottles. Fire Department and FPD arrived. Didn't seem to be THAT bad. Still had SOME oil, which was clean. No check engine light. Didn't want to start it. It had not seized, and was still running when I had stopped and shut it off.

The oil filter was VERY loose. Could this be the culprit? I hope this was the only reason for the fire. No pics unfortunately. Car currently resides at Darrel Waltrip Honda. I'm crossing my fingers

firsdt thing that comes to my mind is that oil from loose oil filter got tossed uo onto the exhaust manifold. oil on the manifold got hot enough to catch fire.

Yep, filter was not tightened properly, pressured oil shot out, hit the exhaust manifold, and smoked/caught on fire..

Sorry to hear, who last changed the oil (if you know)? If it was last changed before you bought, go talk to that dealer.

There are others that experienced this when the filter was improperly torqued. Hand torquing the filter is not enough. The factory PCX oil filter has an O-ring seal and requires metal-to-metal contact (7/8 turn) for a proper seal, otherwise it can work loose and cause an oil fire.

Loose Filter

Another loose filter...

Like others said, if the dealer did it, they should clean up the mess.

It was a used car dealer in Alabama. Hollywood Motors. As for oil, this is what the dipstick looked like after about 20 minutes after the car was stopped and turned off

The | representing the level the oil came up to

Yeah, thats low.

Think any damage was done? After the smoke started it was only running for 10-15 seconds at idle, I clutched in when I saw the smoke.
