not sure why you would polish the valve cover-
not gonna get swirls out of it no matter how much you polish!

do you want to get it new looking, or do you want to change the way it looks?

(do you have a link that you wanted us to check out?)

maybe you meant that you want to remove the color and have a stainless steel look, like sideways has (if you have seen pics of his car)?

It doesn't look like stainless if you buff it out after sanding.

The process is very simple. Google metal polisher and your location and have some one do it for you. It is a whole lot of work if you don't do it often. I got mine from Rick's.

That said, if you want to polish it most will do it in the following steps:

1. Strip paint (or you can sand it off.)
2. Sand with coarse sand paper (60) to flatten down and take out imperfections.
3. Follow up with 120 and then 200. If you have a powerful buffer (more than one horsepower) you could power buff it now. If not, go to #4.
4. Sand with 400 wet or dry and water.
5. Sand with 1000 wet or dry and water.
6. Buff out with compound.
7. Buff polish with rouge.
8. Follow up with Semi-chrome and a soft cloth by hand to remove any swirl marks.

Here is a timing chain cover that I just installed, it came up nice:

Ace Hardware has rouge. Autoparts stores have Semichrome.
