Default My F20 is Knockin'

I was driving back from Alabama and was about 5 to 10 miles out from my Apartment when I downshifted into 3rd around 70ish MPH. I didn't mechanically over-rev the motor - but my baby started knockin'!! I immediately pulled over @ a gas station and popped the hood. Sound was def. coming from the valve train. I had no instrument malf. lights of any sort, engine temp was 3 bars as usual, oil levels were good, and car drove fine (shifting @ 3000 RPM's - no loss of power that I could tell.....). I babied it the 2 to 3 miles back to my apartment and parked her.

I want to thank WillieG and especially Negcamber for their inputs and advice.

I had her towed to JonHall Honda this afternoon here in Daytona off of Nova Rd. The Service Rep. - Eva - was very helpful. She informed not to mention the downshift - even though I was in the correct powerband!! That didn't make any sense but I appreciate the fact that she's going out of her way to try and get my motor back to 100% - under my warranty.

I should hear which way this is going to go sometime tomm. and Rob:

Eva told me that if the damage is above 700 - 800 dollars - then a Honda Care advisor will come inspect. But I'm not getting charged for the removal of the oil pan to inspect the bottom end.

I'll let everyone know which way this goes - and even though JonHall is a small, itty-bitty dealership... they get a from me. The Honda Care Rep might be a different story.

the down shift into third at 70 should have put right around 8000 rpm. and that should not have damaged much. maybe stress to valves making them looser than before and therefore louder (good valve adjustment should do it)

Did you go over 9k rpm?? if you did you were going faster than 70

does the knocking increase in intervals with higher rpm or get louder? if so then it is probably spun bearings

I have recent experience with a couple of knocking incedents

I'm certain that I didn't over-rev. But the knocking is loud immediately upon cranking. When the car was idling today - no knock. But rev it up slightly and it comes back and it does get louder w/higher revs... I was scared to rev it 2 high tho. From what I've explained to ppl more knowledgeable than me - almost every1 has said, "spun rod bearing." I hope it's not the worst case scenario - but it doesn't look good.

if it only gets louder and not quicker with revs it could be the cam chain tensioner. I have gone through one or two of those too. If you say the sound is coming from the top of the motor, gets louder and not quicker with revs and goes away at idle....I would have them replace or at least check the cam chain tensioner first.

From what I am hearing, spun bearing IMO. Good luck.

Exclamation

<----no expert but I have heard my share of spun bearings and bad tensioners and VTAK solenoids gone bad and a plethora of other oddities.

the dealership should nail it down pretty good I would just hate to see all the down time going through the bottom of the engine when it could be topside related.

Delaerships are over-careful anyways so it will probably be a warranty replacement new motor after much deliberation by the district manager and all the other regional managers. Honda dont rebuild nothin
