Default Mugen exhaust system fitted

Finished fitting the system about an hour ago and have just returned from a restrained blast (the roads are pretty wet...) with SWMBO.

The Mugen is the perfect system for me. Sounds much deeper than the original, no resonance and not too loud. The appearance is nicely understated too. The tail pipes are not as evenly centred in the bumper apertures as I would like so there may be some work with the persauder required.

A big thanks to chrisr111 who took me out in his S which convinced me Mugen was the way to go.

The Buddy Club CF bonnet is going on next weekend along with the Mugen CAI. Alas I'm certain the BC bonnet is going to need cutting to fit the CAI.

No problem Mark.

I'm suprised the exhaust is not perfectly aligned (or very close). How did you fit it? I bet you bolted the two bits together before you bolted the exhaust to the cat.

Apparently it's better to fit the big bit and bolt to the cat and then fit the other smaller bit - supposed to align better.

Chris.

Indeed I did - but I have a feeling the centre box rubber hanger bracket may have been bent in transit - it was bloody difficult to get the hanger on to it as it was so close to the box casing. With no reference with which to compare I just mounted it as is.

One thing I did notice whilst under the car was the very skimpy attempt at rust proofing. And in only 4K miles there's considerable chipping of the black paint that disgusies the sill seams. There's not a lot of protection on floor pans and various other areas.

I have surface corrosion starting on the suspension system too - for a car that's never seen salt and has been wet twice at most, it's quite alarming...

I figured no one would be interested in seeing another set of Mugen tail pipes, even if one of them is slightly higher than the other...

The point of the post is the quality of the sound.

I will endeavour to take a shot tonight however and post if for all you Mugen exhaust image junkies

The centre hanger always looks like that.

Try undoing the small section and adjusting before getting the hammer out....

Had the opporunity to inspect my cars bottom this week-end, and like you surprised at how much of the chassis is bare metal.
Again all suspension has a light coating of rust, despite the car rarely getting wet.

Whilst the rust is harmless and in the medium term unlikely to affect the intergrity of the components should I wish for a tidy clean concours-like finish I have been advised by professional car restorers ( who generaly regard Hammertite a DIY product ) to paint all exposed metal with POR15 Rust obtained from Frost Equipment www.frost.co.uk

Bit of a cock-up here...

I mentioned the alignment was not so good on the exhaust system and yesterday afternoon I finally got the opportunity to check the car out again (it's been busy at work and I don't arrive home until late weekdays). Also Tango Man's image got me scratching my head...

In daylight and with Tango man's image above to refer to, it's clear that the system I have fitted to my '07 is the same as his - it is for a pre '04! It has the smaller diameter ends to the silencers (albeit the actual orifice is the same diameter). I did see chris111r's system which is correct, but I clealry didn't commit the shape to memory.

I did order the correct part and I only checked the box when it arrived for any signs of physical damage. The Mugen box doesn't state the part number and without a post '04 system to physically compare it too I have some excuse.

I've been in touch with the supplier and I'm awaiting a reply, but as the system is fitted - although it has only done 7-8 miles in the dry - I think I might be wasting my time.

I suppose the pre '04 Mugen system is perhaps little more honest than the later model year's - it doesn't create the illusion of having a larger outlet than it actually does!!!!!!
