Oil viscosity
Why go away from spec????
Anyone????
I'm not arguing. I just want to understand why people go away from 10w30. I've seen this from time to time over the years and never got a good/straight answer.

Simple.
Oil flow at a cold start.

Look at the 20C column.
The first 4 oils are popular 10W-30 oils.
The number is the viscosity in cSt.
1 cSt = water.
They are all around 160 cSt, some a bit lower, some a bit higher.
Now find the oil I'm using, Shell Helix Ultra X 0W-30.
It has a viscosity of "only" 128 at the same temp.
That's about 20% less.
This also means there is about 20% more oil flow.
(simply put, to make my point, IMO the basic way of thinking is true)
We are still talking about 20C temp.
Look at the lower temps and you will see a lot more difference.
Oil flow is very important.
That is why I decided to "invest" in good true synthetic 0W-30 oil.
My manual was written in 1999, prety soon its 2008.
Oil has changed a lot over the years, lots of $$$$ put in R&D.
