Having moved house in December, I now face at least 10 minutes of country driving a day, so have upgraded to the Philips Rally 100W H1 bulbs as recommended by others on here. From the search, there is not much said about them after installation, which I have interpreted to be a good thing - eg no problems with overheating or overloading, so I went for it.
The installation is as straightforward as following the method in the manual, it can be a bit fiddley, but on the whole was simplier than I expected. Total time was about 40 minutes but could do it quicker than that with experience. However there is something about changing halogen bulbs and being so scared of touching the bulb glass with your fingers that you take on the persona of a bomb disposal expert during the process which does slow you down.
The different light output of the bulbs is clear to see with the naked eye, but in addition as a comparison I took a before and after photo. I maintained the same exposure and film speed for each picture. The camera itself noted 'one stop' of increased exposure in the after shot.
BEFORE (55W)
AFTER (100W)
On the second photo the crest of the road ahead is now visable as is the arch of trees above/past it. The HID transition line is also less apparent. Obviously the more objects around the road the more effective the improvement appears. There is no doubt vision is improved so that is good enough for me.
The Rally lamp is strictly illegal for use on public roads. Rally Lamps produce more heat than standard lamps and thus could damage the reflector. The higher poer consumption of the Rally lamp could also damage the car electrical system if care is not taken.

Keep an eye on those...
Yep, I read and considered all that, however as said, I took the lack of dissaster stories posted on here as a good proof test.
They are not road legal, however in a light garage looking at them rather than driving with them there is no way that they would be noticed in an MOT. After that it is down to courtesy and not using them in the face of oncoming traffic. (but i look forward to blasting people when they flash me for mistakenly thinking my HIDs are mains.... every day nearly ).

Your HIDs do look quite hig in the pics, certainly higher than mine. It may be worth looking into?
