Default Got my CAR today! Drove 30km.. 1st time driving standard

Well, err i drove 30km today to get my car, I crunched it once going up a really steep hill as I fumbled, and stalled 5 times. err maybe hit Vtec once... hee hee but all is well, the engine don't smell too bad afterward.

My question is when I am going up a really steep hill, about 40 degrees, and going about 40km/h am going at 3rd gear, am I suppose go back down to 2nd gear (since we suppose to go up hills on lower gears) or am I suppose to go and hit 4th gear cause I am going at about 40 km/h. A friend who taught me the first time told me to go lower gear when going up a hill. So I think I went from 3rd to 2nd gear up that hill and hit vtec ... errr

Well I am glad I made home safe, going for another spin now ^^;

ta ta, thanx for advice.

p.s. can u guys give me an rough estimate on when I should be shifting? at what speed? or do I just always shift at about 3500 - 4000 rpm?

Thanks don't wanna kill my car by the weekend.

Even tho I'm not an owner, I've heard taht during break in you should vary the RPMs at which you shift so that the engine gets the full range (up to 6K rpm) to munch on and be happy

Assuming this is a new car, keep it below 5500 RPM for the first 600 miles, and yes, you will generally want to go to the next lower gear on a steep grade, but keep the tach between about 3000 and 5000 RPM for now, and you should be fine.

One more bit of friendly advice: you might want to stay off steep hills (especially ones where you need to start from a dead stop) until you become a bit more adept at driving a stick shift. Your clutch will appreciate it. Enjoy and congratulations.

DO NOT EXCEED 6K RPM FOR THE FIRST 1000KMs!!!! Very important...you need to break in the engine.

Can I suggest that you meet with us during one of our drives and we can give some pointers?

PS post a few pics

Wah? u want a pic of me or da car? : ) heee

Well I got plans to take it apart just now. to put in some stuffz.

Oh btw, I was planning to first paint the calipers but they said I have to bring it into a autoshop to check the torque on the bolts after i put them back on. gahhh that's so much pain...

Ya I think I maybe have hit vtec once today and it was one of those 40 degree up hill starting from a dead stop. I started to roll back, was afraid to hit the guy behind me, rev to about 5000 (i guess b/c i didn't release the clutch enough) and I shifted to 2nd (still going up the hill) then 3rd, because I was hitting about 40 km/h at that time, but at 3rd, it seems like it was a bit weak, so I shifted back to 2nd, and it rev up to about 6000.. wooow oo i swear I 'll just drive it around my neighbourhood for the next 500 km.
no more funny traffics.

p.s. I notice sometimes when shifting into 3d, i feel a little crunching, (very little) is it because I didn't clutch it in properly?

: ) Thanks for everyone's tips.

that was odd, I had to put in my vehicle # inorder for the forum to give me 10 mb of picture space, otherwise I had 0 mb. and before I couldn't have an Avatar now I can !! Yeah.

Okay, I felt it today, when I was on one of those other hill, (I picked a REALLY bad path home) I was fumbling and shifted from 4th to 3rd and felt the crunch crunch crunch but I think I quickly clutch back in, and returned back to 4th and it was okay. When I shifted from 4th to 3rd, I remember my clutch was only in 1/2 way. Yep I tried shifting from 4->3rd while the clutch was only half in.

so what exactly do I have to do to make it cruch? <-- so I can avoid it

matrix: I am in markham, where do U guys usually meet? I'll check the forum often then. : )
