Default Looking to Purchase a Car Alarm

My birthday is next week and I have asked for a car alarm for the S. So to assist my hubby in the search I was wondering what those of you have and suggest. I don't need anything fancy (don't want remote start) and we can't afford anything too costly. I am just looking for something to give me that extra peace of mind that if someone goes for my seats, that I did all I could.

Also, we'd be looking for places to install as well so deals like Circuit City where install is free with purchase would be great too!

Thanks!

be carefull. virtually any alarm will be effective if it is properly installed. Personally I like clifford or DEI.
Here's what you want on the alarm:
Hood Pin- it will be extra. make sure you add this.
Proximity sensor- covers the cabin of the car. Get one that is adjustable from the remote.
Shock sensor- most of them come with this. it should be installed on the steering column (they will know what I mean when you tell them)
Door lock/unlock
Trunk Pop

make sure they power it with a wire directly to the battery, and a Ground from the battery as well.
If you have flashing lights, make sure they put a fuse on the light output.

Starter disable is a must.

If you ask for these things and the shop you go to does good work you should be well protected.

One other thing. An alarm should only go off if someone is messing with the car. the Prox sensor should not go off unless you reach for the center console (and get close to it). the shock sensor should not go off unless you give the tires or windshield a good shot (don't break the window)

I installed alarms for years professionally, but that was a long ass time ago.

Make sure you find a good shop and remember you get what you pay for. figure 350-500 for a system. it's still way cheaper than loosing your seats.

hope this helpls, let me know if you have anymore questions. I can recomend great shops here in S. FL, but I am not familiar with shops in your area.

Free install deals are usually jsut for radios, they take less than 20 minute to install. An alarm install takes hours.

I'm someone form your area will chime in and recomend a good local shop that has S2000 experiance. This is not an easy car to put an alarm on.

Excellent advice S2KSuzuka!!!
Hopefully, more S2K owners will choose an alarm as their next mod.

Clifford FTW. I've had mine installed since last year w/prox and 2 way pager and nobody will touch my car.

I totally agree w/thraak. A decent alarm should be any S owner's 1st mod regardless if it's garaged or not.

Edit: I had my alarm installed in Deland; but I wouldn't recommend the place for install. They half-assed it and I had to redo some of their work.

I do agree with Mitch on what you will need. And yes it does keep most thieves away.

Though I am one of the few that had a car stolen with all that done. It was a 96 Accord.
I even had a feul cut off installed. I had all the work done in SoCal, and the car was ripped off in VA. AutoPager did not even go off.

The only thing I can think of is when my car was in a body shop for over three weeks that somebody could have went over the car, and new where everything was.

Don't let this deter you Sinsin. You are definitley going in the right direction.

Wow! Thanks for the info. everyone! I admit a lack of knowledge in this area (What do you mean I can't just pop it in and go? ) so that's what S2KI is here for.

I'll definitely pass on this wealth of knowledge to my hubby to help him decide. If anyone knows any good installers or places to go, please post up as well!

Danke!

good thread, I am also slowly building up some money for an alarm. I have found out I am most likely going to Hawaii in August and have heard a good alarm is going to be required to retain my car.

Anyone know a good alarm installer in jacksonville?

Talk to Pete at Soundwaves at 813-684-6060. He installed my Viper alarm with perimeter sensor and it's been awesome. He does a very good job and his customer service is top notch.
