Default Someone stole my laptop!

I went to the datsun Z car show today and when I got back,(around 4 pm) I realized my laptop (dell inspiron 8100) had been stolen from my work. I got to work around noon and dropped off my laptop, then left for the car show.

The thing that makes me the most angry is I know who did it but can't prove it. My boss' son has a set of keys, the only person besides me tohave a set, and my boss was with me at the car show. I went to the theifs house, he is at work, and went through his room and found nothing. I went to his work and it wasn't in his car.

I know he will try to sell it as soon as he can, probably for real cheap. He left no evidence that he was at my work. I have been thinking of ways to prove that he took it: ask the security guard if he saw his car, spy on him when he leaves work, look at the phone bill next month to see if anyone made phone calls from noon to three.

If anyone has any good ideas on other ways I can prove it was him, I would appreciate it.

One more thing: him being the only one to have a set of keys isn't proof. He says he doesnt have a set but I know he does.

That sucks! I hope you catch the thief! I dunno what I'd do if mine was stolen. Dunno how your office is set up but I'd ask everyone if they saw who was in and out of your office during that time. Someone must have seen or know something. Someone recently "took" something here at work--I posted a sign to return it and they could call me and meet somewhere anonymously but they just left it outside by the front door. I dunno about a laptop though. Good luck!

call Dell and see if they've electronically coded the serial # of devices in the motherboard. If so, even the thief decides to "fdisk" and wipe the hard drive he still can get caught as the notebook can be tracked via mac-address certain cards plugged into the motherboard.

you'll have to speak to a top tech person at Dell in order for them to comply.

I know Compaq, IBM and Toshiba have started to implement this "hard coding" of notebooks..

Even still, a professional can still gut it and use the shell.

But it's worth a try ..
