Another spectacular (and final 2008) S2ki Oregon drive with a chilly start that turned to a beautiful sunny and clear day.
We had almost a total turnout for breakfast though we ended up missing Geoff/Crystal (best wishes to your dad!) and the new Mike (200kgg). Bill made it at the last second to enjoy the day with us as well.
We were able to greet Jody again, who happened to bring Ken (firesnoop) with her this time!
Anthony (nv_blitz) made his first appearance as well. While doing the official paperwork deed, I learned that he and I share the same birthday. How's that for awesome.
Terry is a trooper, attending so she can practice her caravan skills with the group..
...AND putting up with us crazies
Early morning chills and fog were faced without hesitation
Blue skies emerged and warmed everyone up in time for the Aviation museum.
"Ahhh, the Spruce Goose isn't THAT big"
Ok, maybe it is
Why explore one plane at a time when you can see them all at once from above?
A quick lineup in front of the museum before heading onward
It was obviously time to make our way towards food.
When you're at the coast, Mo's is the only acceptable location to eat and Lincoln City fulfills that just perfectly. Delicious clam chowder
Somehow, many in the group didn't get enough to eat so they decided it was time for ICE CREAM! !
We even found an ultra rare Civic....
Type-R....oh wait, I mean SE-R
Doug made sure that he wasn't left out of ANY of the group activities, known or unknown. Nice.
After some spare time to wander the beach
We regrouped right outside Lincoln City
And rushed off to our next destination, Depoe Bay. We made due with the difficult parking when Doug had a mishap! It's pretty tricky to unlock your car when your keys are locked in your trunk. This wouldn't have happened if you were parked top down (sans hardtop), you know.
Garret brought up a good point at dinner that evening, that Doug sacrificed his car to give us a chance to watch the whale in the bay, spend time with eachother and have a laugh or ten. So thank you Doug. All the teasing was worth it, right?
Garret to the rescue with his AAA which brought a tow truck to assist
The driver performed well under pressure of an active audience (when their eyes could be diverted from the whale watching).
Crisis averted, we were a little behind schedule so we all decided to forgoe the lighthouse and continue straight into Newport and on to the next pitstop to make up for lost time. While pulling in to Ellmaker park, a gentleman in a Suburban caught our attention and told us that he saw us at 8:30 that morning on Wilsonville Rd! Small world!
We also found evidance of Larry's pre-drive
Last leg on the way home through some great countryside
And into Dallas where dinner plans were decided and then Salem to head home
Dinner was a great winding down with some great food, chatter and laughs that we always share, and eventually people had to peel off for sleep and only a few stayed for the after-party.
A fantastic way to close out the 2008 drive season before the snow/rain fills the days. Good drive everyone. We'll be sure to see you all next year (especially Ken, riiiiiiight?) when the drives start anew for 2009.
I am sure some monthly dinner meet plans will be showing up to fill everyone's need to visit with all our friends again.
Really? I am the first to post? And it is Sunday morning no less, wow.
I figured you all would be all over this thing last night.
Well, I guess I get to get this started. I don't have hardly any pictures, but I can give a very brief synopsis of what happened.
We all met at Shari's and most of us ordered breakfast. We got started a little late. I led the first group of 9 out around 8:30. Wilsonville road was fun, but being stuck behind a FedEx truck and a couple of trucks with horse trailers took some fun out of it.
Getting through Newberg proved to be easier than I thought. Then it was on to the Air Museum. We all regrouped and took a brief tour of the museum. Now that the Space Museum is open there was actually space to maneuver around the planes better. We tried to get permission to get on the grass, but the lady running things said we couldn't be behind the planes that were on display out side, so we opted to park on the road in front and get our group shots there. There is photographic evidence that Amy really knows how to park her car.
From there we left in mass for lunch. The drive down to the coast was fairly uneventful. We got to Mo's right on time and had a wonderful meal. After the meal we had time to walk around on the piers and boardwalk area. A few of us even had time for ice cream from the local shop.
At this point we were all jazzed up about heading to the lighthouse. Well, that was not to happen. When we got to Depoe Bay parking was very scarce so, some of us ended up on the seafront parking, but the majority of us were up the hill several blocks away. While waiting for everyone to assemble, I decided I was going to take a couple of pics of the whales (yes, there were whales there yesterday!). Well, into the trunk I go to get my camera. Whoops, need to change lens so I can get a closer look. At this point the car is locked and trunk is open. I put my keys in my camera bag, not thinking of course. Once I changed the lens, SLAM! There goes any chance of making it to the lighthouse. Yep, I locked my keys in the trunk! I am now thoroughly embarrassed and I tried to convince everyone to go on with out us, but as a group they decided to stick it out with me. Garrett called AAA and about 45 minutes later we were on our way. While waiting for the tow truck we took advantage of the opportunity and bonded, and whale watched, and had some good laughs.
Needless to say, we are now way off schedule. We skipped the lighthouse and met up at a Freddy's to regroup. From there we were back on the road heading home. We stopped in Dallas and decided that when we got back into town that we would head to Claim Jumper for dinner. After dinner the group made there way back to our house and played some pool(BTW Paul is a pool shark), danced (well Aaron and Teresa danced) and killed off my sons lives on the Lego Star Wars game on the Nintendo DS (thanks Garret, what am I going to tell him when he sees that his lives are gone?)
The party ended around 11:00 with everyone having had a good time.
I will post some pics later, and I am sure there will be pics of our enjoyable time at the Depoe Bay sea wall!
and she was even seen cavorting with vehicles of other colors.
i want to thank you all (and to chris, 'yall) for allowing jody and i to join in on your reindeer games. WE HAD A BLAST!! you accepted us as one of your own and we can't thank you enough.
as for the drive, sure the delay in depo bay put us a bit behind schedule, but it could not have been spent with better people. and with the opportuinty to stick your nose up under the bumper of the one infront without worrying about him gernading the brakes in some sort of road rage thing..... way too much fun.
i think i can speak again for jody when i say we were quite taken aback by the friendship and open kindess you shared with us from the very start. thank you.
and if you'll have me, the unicorn will be seen again, and again, and again. NFR's rule (rookies and reds)
It was a fine day indeed! Yesterday seemed to be as much about socializing as it was about driving. (How can it be that I like you all more each time we're together? Doesn't seem possible!) I'm proud of us for sticking with Doug while we waited for the Key-Meister to show up.
Nice to meet Anthony and Ken! I hope you guys will join us again.
I'm sure there will be Lots of Shots of cars, cars, cars posted by other folks. I'll contribute some scenery.
That's Ken & Jody walking on the beach in Lincoln City. (This shot was a coincidence - I WASN'T stalking them.) (Not that anyone can prove anyway.)

What a great way to end the summer driving season. Had fun with everyone. Good to see some new faces. Had a great time. Good people, good weather and good cars!
As always, thanks to everyone that helped to make this drive a success. A lot of work and planning goes into these drives.
Heres a few pics that I have:

Look, a red S!

The coast drive yesterday was a blast I really had a good time. I enjoyed meeting all of you looking forward to hanging out with you guys again. Here are some of the pics I have.
Hey everyone! Sherry and I had a great time. We really enjoy the drive and seeing everybody! It was nice to meet Anthony, Ken and Jody. Hope to see you guys again in future drives. The weather was awesome! Anyways, while waiting at Depot Bay we really enjoyed everyone's company. .......(Oh by the way, we did see actual whales!! Ask Marc if you don't believe us. He saw many whales!!!)
Sorry we decided not to do dinner, I had to work early the next morning and needed to get some zzzzzz's. :
Damn! I can't believe I missed this drive! Well hopefully everyone had a good time. I unfortunately encountered some problems with my apartment complex that made it impossible for me to make it.
Hope to make the next one, and the one after that, and after that...
Just seeing all of those S2000s makes me sad not to have seen it in person, oh well, what can you do? Next time.
