Default Taxing mileage instead of gasoline

This just gets worse and worse. If the thought of a higher gas tax doesn't get your blood boiling, this will. From Yahoo.com

Oregon looks at taxing mileage instead of gasoline

PORTLAND, Ore.

This will encourage people to buy less efficient cars since all cars will pay the same tax.

They can say what they want, that little box will allow the state to track people.

I can see it work if people have the choice of the milage OR per gallon tax rate and the tracking box has an off feature.

If this kicked in I would be taking public transportation more where its easier to take than drive. I think its another government scandal when they are able to track us. We didn't know they were recording our phone conversations to see if we were terrorists, but they did it anyways without asking.

I drive 2,000+ miles per month...all for work. Add in another 300~400 miles on the S2000 per month for enjoyment...so that's an easy 2,300~2,400 miles a month. I already pay property taxes on my cars...I pay state income tax (NC)...I pay fuel taxes on EVERY gallon...sure, why not?

Yeah, the roads are already in great condition so I don't understand why they need more money.

i don't think it'll work, think about it
people think it's big brother keeping an eye on us(which it really is) plus you'd see even MORE suvs, which would piss off the green yuppies ,then the green yuppies would protest ,then al gore would get involved, and we all know al gore is going to be the leader of the world so he'll make'em not do it
it may be a crackpot theory but hey it could be worse

F'in government! Why don't they look to cut costs to give them more road-funds? Nope, tax and spend!

All cars use fuel.

They need to raise the fuel tax. Period.

This idea is very stupid, as it will allow an option to cheat the system. Since your vehicle has to electronically interact with another device to report your mileage, how long do you think it will be before the system is hacked?

People have already figured out how to hack the cameras at the intersections for stop lights and speeding.

Perhaps what these brain-dead politicians really need to do is figure out a way to pay for road work without fuel or mileage taxes at all. It can be done. It has been done. It can be done again.

Why should someone who lives in a rural area with a 30 mile 30 minute commute pay more in taxes than someone in a major metro area with a 10 mile 1 hour commute?
