I'm a DSLR noob and just picked up a D60 a few months ago, I love it. See my New York pics thread for initial results from my first shoots. It's just about the cheapest DSLR there is as well, so get something better if you can afford it.

Here's the thread... https://www.s2ki.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=660392

The body is just the beginning.. Then comes the 1k lenses:P .. I had planed to get a dslr, until the camera lady from cnet said you can really tell the dif between a 500 and 1k$ lens ..

I settled with a slr like camera. It has single fixed lense and its a step up from point and shoot but a step down from dslr.. just something you might want to look into.

Don't look at the price of the body. It means nothing. That's like looking at the price of a car with no engine. Figure a solid $2000 budget for a decent SLR setup. Yes, you CAN get away with less, but the whole point of SLRs is to have the best glass, yadda yadda yadda. You can't get away with it for less than $1500.

I dunno about that

Just like most hobbies the sky is the limit to what you can spend, and if you are serious into it, or make your money from it, yes you want the best equipment.

Sounds to me like the Nikon D40 might be your best bet. Its Nikon's entry level DSLR and is kitted with a decently capable 18-55mm lens. Can be had for $450 new - and will take some great pictures.

The biggest thing with SLR photography is that it allows control over pretty much every aspect of the picture - and all DSLR's will do that.

I had the D40, and when I upgraded, I learned a lot. I learned that I could have done a lot with that camera, and kinda regret selling it. With your budget you may be able to pick up a used D60 or even a D80.

I'd recommend just sticking to your budget, and learning what features come with what cameras, and weigh the price...

*Not sure about the canon side of things

Get the D40 w/ kit lens

The kit lens is very good imo...and most reviews will tell you that the IQ isn't that far off from it's $1200 professional counterpart
