Default Replacing the plastic rear window

Has anyone replaced the rear window at a reasonable cost. The dealer wants $225 for the zip in part and $900 (8.5 hrs.) to install it claiming the seats need to be removed.

Has anyone done this before? Is it a big deal?

The seats come out in 10-15 minutes. 4 bolts each + wiring.

yes its a big deal. not only the seats, but all the plastics need to be removed, the top ALMOST needs to be removed. replacing the top and rear window will run you approximately $1600 if that gives you a good estimate. also, keep in mind, the dealer usually sends off the cars to a top replacement place - which is slightly cheaper. find a top place locally, order the rear window from trevor and it will come out to be a few hundred less. but yes.. its expensive.

If you're at the crossroads of needing to replace the plastic rear window, would this be the time to convert over to the glass rear window instead? Has anyone performed this mod??? If so, what the costs???

Is the plastic window not cover under warranty?

Assumming you're not using the window tube protector and the Muz mat, I would imagine over time the window would be pretty scratched up and the creased would be bad enough that it would affect rearward visibility.

1. one time only in canada.

2. i was using none of those things - it was scratched to hell, but there were NO creases. it was flat as a pancake. yes there was virtually no rearward visibility.

i also forgot to mention that my replacement window is a lot thinner than the OE one that came with the car....

TKG,

So how's your new window holding up?

How is it that you manage not to get creases in your plastic window when most owners I know of get it? Is there some kindof treatment you perform on the window?

Thanks for the helpfull information! To answer some of the questions -

Frankly, I did not ask about warranty. My dealer has not sold many S2000s and he did not mention it. I think I will pursue the warranty suggestion and see if they will do the same as Canada. I checked the forum and have the Honda contact names from the glass window retrofit discussion.

I do not use the mat or protector and the plastic had some scratches but no creases. It was OK - not a visibility problem. About what I would expect from a rag top with a plastic window.

I also got a lead on a local upolstery guy that does them for Miatas but he's closed over the holiday. Another local guy thought he could get a glass replacement and is checking.

I will post a follow up if anything favorable happens.

Glenn
