I think not. It is highly recommended, but for $4/qt Mobil 1 is 90% the oil (if not as good). I hear the reformulated M1 is not as good, but I seriously doubt you will notice any difference in 3k mile changes between the two oils.

One thing I don't understand is that if AMsoil is soo good, then why do they only sponser those dirt truck racing events?

Can't answer that, all I can do is answer with another question: if it's so good, why is it only sold through multi-level marketing?!

Umm, before all of you go spouting off about how expensive it is and what not, it is only $5-6/qt and yes I am using amsoil. Do some research before coming up with bogus replies.
Also, I am not aware of it being sold through multi level marketing.

You can purchase direct from them through their website however.

And dirt truck sponsors aren't the only ones using them. Many car clubs like the subaru club and various racing teams use them.

And how can you be such cheapskates on oil when you're driving a 35k+ car??

If you like Mobil 1, that is fine. But don't rag on other oil products just because they cost a dollar more a quart. Besides, you don't see Amsoil making ridiculous claims like it will run an engine that has no oil pan or will make your old motor gain hp.

Works fine for me btw since I tend to go for 6-7k miles without an oil change as I am busy and don't always have time to change the oil every 3-4k miles. Gas mileage still averages 24-25mpg even after hard redline shifts in stop and go traffic along with the occasional 100-mph jaunts.

I'm using Amsoil too in my e36 M3....

I've tried a few different types...
Mobil 1 trisyn 5w30 (can't feel/see any difference)
Mobil 1 trisyn 0w30 (burnt off result in valve ticks... not good)
Royal purple 5w30 (can't feel/see any difference)

Finally.. Amsoil series 2000 0w30, i see mileage gains... and more
importantly i ran more than 6k miles w/o burning off anything...

The only other thing that I wanted to try is Redline... which is
around $8/quart...
(you can actually get amsoil for about $6/quart vs $5/quart for
the mobil1 at Target)

The multi-level marketing is this:

1. You call Amsoil and say you want to be a distributor. You do this to get a discount - you have no intention of selling to other people. You pay a small fee and then you can get their products cheaper. If you use a lot of the spray lubricants (which are very good), oil and filters, the distributor program is very worth it.
2. Another distributor in your area calls you to "help you get your distributorship up and running".
3. At this point, you tell the person to never call you again and they won't.

So, yes, there is a MLM aspect to it, but it is easily undone.

If you and a couple of friends get together and one does the distributorship, it works out great - one fee but everybody orders and gets the discounts. Also, with the discount, you are closer to the Mobil1 price range.

DouglaS2000:
I'm not aware of M1 making any of those claims. Don't confuse IT with infomercial-marketed stuff. As for spending money on it... maybe you make enough money, but I bought my car by saving money, not throwing it away on things I don't need.

YellowStreak:
I call that MLM. My beef is that I won't buy anything that is marketed that way; marketing targeted like that is for inferior products that can't sell themselves. I've seen all the testing, and Amsoil looks good... as good, maybe marginally better than M1.

I wasn't defending their MLM scheme - I don't like it either. I would prefer that they say "send us $20 and you get a discount".

I like their products enough to ignore the MLM stuff. Besides, my buddy has the distributor status, so I have never had to go through it personally :-)
