Default air conditioner failure

I've noticed recently, my a/c would make a slight ticking noise when running, but didn't think much of it.

today, a white cloud came out from the hood while I was driving down the road, and the car began to idle funny for a few seconds. I pulled over and took a look under the hood, and noticed an odd smell (kinda plastic-like). I didn't detect any leaks, hoses appeared alright at a glance. no check engine lights, so I drove the short distance home.

now I've determined the a/c doesn't work. I'm not too worried, because of extended warranty.

but my question is has anyone else had this issue?

My A/C recently stopped working and it was recently re-charged. Turns out that the compressor isnt turning on. All the fuses work and there is still pressure in the lines so I'm stumped. If I can't fix it by this weekend its going to the dealer

I had that happen in my GTI a few years ago.

I was driving to class and, out of nowhere, white gas comes hissing out from underneath the hood and my A/C stopped working.

Took it to the shop and it was just a matter of finding and repairing a leak the recharging the system.

It may have blown out a seal because of pressure buildup, which could happen when the high/low side valve malfunctions and doesn't release pressure.

So you might still have some pressure left, which you know by pushing on the pin in the service port, right?

But not enough to be in the work range of the freon pressure sensor (located by the horn, I believe). Therefore ECU won't let A/C clutch engage.

makes sense, didn't know about the pin in the service port. where's that located?

Warranty coverage is going to depend on the point of failure. Hopefully you didn't take a rock to the condenser.

Maybe the compressor has seized (or is close to). This just happend on my ~150k civic DD. Just pick up a new one and throw it on there. Easy swap, refill the freon and you're back to new.

You may have to stop by the ac refill place to empty it before you undo the pressure hoses.
