Default AP2 engine in AP1 revs to 9000 and then limp mode

Hi guys, first post =)

I'm looking at this 2002 AP1 with a 2007 AP2 engine in it. I took it for a test drive and hit it, expecting to get to the 8200 rev limiter, but it kept going to about 9000 and then entered limp mode (limited to 3000 rpm). Is this an easy fix?

My first thoughts were that it's probably an AP1 ecu in there, letting the engine spin to 9000, but then some sensor in the AP2 engine itself seeing the over-rev and cutting the fuel? I searched around and read about people using the AP1 ecu on an AP2 with no problem though, so now I really don't know.

The car does have a CEL and the ABS light is on... I might go back to read the codes, but yeah...

Maybe a bit of a basket case, but it's pretty cheap and could make a fun beater. Imagine that- an s2000 beater What do you guys think?

Thanks

if it's really cheap then maybe go for it?? but a stock AP2 motor that revs to 9k when it clearly isn't supposed to would worry me enough to run far far away :S

Oh, some of the specs:
It is a reconstructed title with some less than perfect bodywork, but the frame is straight and it drives well.
~145k on the chassis
~50k on the motor

2007 Ap2 bumpers, headlights, taillights, rims
DC header, Koni Yellows

He wants $4500, which is prolly too much. If I can talk him down to 3500 and part some of that stuff out, It could be a good deal for what it is. I dunno, food for thought.

No doubt- I would think it's an AP1 ECU issue. I wouldn't want that engine to rev past 8200! How do I tell if it's an ap1 or ap2 ecu? In the world I'm used to (92-2000 civics), it's fairly easy. I don't know how to tell on the s2000's though

How would a 2007 AP2 engine us a AP1 ECU?

The 06+ engines are DBW, and the AP1 is obviously not.

that is pretty cheap. If i had the money i'd buy it. after an oil and compression test of course.

Thanks guys, y'all have given me something to go on. I think in all likelyhood I will not buy the car, but if he does accept a lowball offer like $3000 or 3500, then I'll do it- I could part it out and make that money back if it comes to it.

I will check if it's DBW, scan & record the ECU codes, reset the ECU, and scan again.

Also I wanted to look at the ECU to see if it's an AP1 or AP2 ECU.

From what I can find on the internet, I found the AP2 ECUs are:
2000-2001 - 37820-PCX-AO1
2002-2003 - 37820-PCX-A02

But what are the AP2 ECUs?
2004-2005 - ????? (AP2 non-DBW)
2006-2009 - ????? (AP2 DBW)

Like I said, it runs fine until right around 9k on this AP2 engine. Maybe the CEL is for an over-rev and running the right ECU would keep it from going to limp mode.

Thanks

sounds like it might be a 07 motor swapped in the with ap1 intake manifold and TB and run by the ap1 ecu and harness and sensors, easy enough to do, I doubt the car was converted over to DBW, especially if it revs to 9k still.
