ok. last night i accelerated through the gears, and while hitting 3rd. about 7k RPM, it briefly cut out of VTEC. i stopped accelerating once it kicked back on and i figured its not good. cut to today, drove 60 miles to work and around town, no problems...no VTEC. did get to 6k RPM tho. i stop by a friends house..hang out for about 45 minutes. go back out to leave. start the car, back up...then as i put it in gear, and pull away. it stutters. i give it a quick rev, and it makes a PING sound. but more mechanical than most detonation i've herd (tho it has been a while) i pulled over after 1/4 mile. and parked it. checked the oil. it was fine. so after an hour, i started it back up idles just fine. go to rev it up slowly, 2k is fine, 3k is fine. 4k PING! *clank* so i let it rev down...hits idle just fine. give it partial gas, starts to lope a bit. 1500-2000 then CLANK...check engine light comes on. i shut it off.


whats wrong?? HELP! can i do a paperclip trick to read the code? im in the process of taking off the valve cover to check everything out. any help appreciated.

That sounds very bad. You can do a paperclip trick... but unfortunately I have a feeling you'll find out what's wrong when you pull off the valve cover or head....

 

CLEAN. head looks clean and i would say i gave it a good inspection. turned the motor over manually. nothing. no extra wear, no loose bits. nothing no signs of wear or anything catastrophic.


i forgot to mention, i just installed a VAFC2 but left it alone. didnt mess with tuning.


i still am wondering about detonation

i am more sure it is detonation...why would my motor be doing this? after running fine for a day.

really??? PING, CLANK? Take VFAC off and pull the codes. Nothing good is happening here.

VAFC is off...i managed to get some video of it running, seems like each time we started it...something was worse. this time, the idle was all wack. and at one point, you can hear this PING sound..its a clank almost. the cams looks great. i'd like to look at them after this running...

vid desription! at first we tried to fire it up w/o the MAP sensor plugged in..nothing good. then it started and idled as you can hear. at 21 and 27 seconds you can hear this POP...the mic couldnt pick it up well enough but that is the sound. the fluctuation idle is new. at 28 second, i give like 5% throttle, trying to even out the loping. and it doesnt respond well, you can hear the results. i shut it off.





anything? should i be pulling the head this weekend?
